Survey’s surprising finding: tea party less popular than atheists and Muslims

What's good about the "tea party" movement? Its concern on ever-growing, ever-encroaching federal power.

In all seriousness, what was good about the tea party even before "extremists"? What was their message?

That it was wrong to give tax payers money to the big investment banks so that they could continue giving their multi million dollar bonuses.

From a source not biased to the Tea Party.

If you remember, the Tea Parties were originally formed to protest the bailouts. They were so mad at the Wall Street bankers who destroyed the economy and then took our hard earned money for their efforts.

Are you saying that you disagree with them there?

Where Are the Tea Party Protests About Wall Street? | Disinformation

P.S. the reason they didn't demand the Dodd/Frank reform bill and support it is because it makes bailouts accepted practice.

I take it you didn't read the entire article.
Cenk Uygur: Where Are the Tea Party Protests About Wall Street?
That's what the tea party claimed they were formed for.
From your source.
If you remember, the Tea Parties were originally formed to protest the bailouts. They were so mad at the Wall Street bankers who destroyed the economy and then took our hard earned money for their efforts.

So, they will take this opportunity, of course, to launch their own protest of Wall Street. They will protest the TARP money, the easy credit, the lack of regulation, the wild risk taking and the excessive bonuses paid with taxpayer money. They're really going to take the fight to them.

Just kidding. They're not going to do anything. They're going to sit out this fight on financial reform and put absolutely no pressure on Wall Street at all. Because they are tools easily manipulated by right-wing organizations funded by corporate America.
Like Uygur wrote, if indeed the tea baggers were formed on the basis of protest and anger against wallstreet bailouts, in particular that of the million dollar bonuses those wallstreet fat cats received, why was there not even a single protest organized by the tea baggers and their funders on wallstreet?
Why instead did we see those protests against Obama and democrats when they were voting on wallstreet reform and re-regulation of?

Really? I'm all ears, specifically how has government been growing since the tea-party came into existence?

You cannot reasonably say we would be talking about any spending cuts without the political pressure the Tea Party influence on the 2010 misterms and the people they helped elect. Every sort of reduction in spending I see is down the road such and such years. The tea party position is to find waste and cut spending now, rather than later. It hasnt been part of the conversation in years. Its a good thing. More government should not always be the answer.

Jfuh, a better question would be how much growth of the federal government led to the creation of the tea party, not the other way around.

I suppose this is why they gained so may seats but an Atheist would have a hard time winning one even with a 20 point head start. (that's not a knock on Atheists, I care less what people believe. I'm just noting it's very hard for an avowed Atheist to win an election outside of some small pockets)

Perry the teaparty gained so many seats BEFORE people realized what their real agenda is....at first the teaparty presented itself as against OBAMACARE...I personally attended 4 local rallies prior to the election and was all for the teaparty....they stood for No more bailouts and stopping the most disgusting Nancy Pelosi from passing obamacare...well those days are gone and the teaparty has since the election exposed their behind and their real agenda, which is take from the middle class and give to the rich...and most of america does not like it.

The Tea Party got into office and did not do what they said they were going to do. They should have accepted Obama's deal and repealed part of the Bush tax cuts. In return they would have gotten major spending cuts (1.2TB, 600B each) in defense and medicare. They refused to take that deal because they did not want to compromise and now we still have an increasing debt and we cut increases in discretionary spending, money that goes right into the pockets of American industry.

The reason why a lot of people don't like the teaparty is that the teaparty comes off as a bunch of angry, sometimes ignorant, extremely ideological, uncompromising, and at times hypocritical ("keep your goddamned government hands off my medicare").

Most people are pragmatic. They recognize that the federal government is too big, but they also recognize that everything the government does is not bad either. They don't want the government in their bedrooms and they want low taxes, but unlike the teapartiers, they also recognize that the government does have a role in environmental protection, worker protections, market oversight, and providing some sort of a public safety net. Probably 70 to 80% of adult Americans would agree with that. Most Americans don't believe that Wall Street can simply regulate itself. Most Americans don't believe that we should "lock the doors to the EPA". Most Americans don't believe that the way to compete with China is to let American companies treat their workers like workers are treated in China and to have air like they have in China. Most people see the teaparty as angry, unrealistic, and naive.

Speaking as a socialist:
Dont wanna take your property, dont wanna take your freedom of speech, dont wanna take your freedom of press, dont wanna take the right for you to make money, dont wanna take your right to choose a job, dont wanna take any of your liberties...

That's exactly what a sneaky commie who wants to take my rights away would say ;)

The Tea party is made up of regular Americans.

As I pointed out, attacking Tea Partiers will blow in the Left's face, but hey...more power to yuz!

the tea party is a koch driven party.

Careful now, that sound reasonable.

I read the entire article. I posted an article that you couldn't claim was biased towards them.

I have no idea what this means. Not a clue.

Why instead did we see those protests against Obama and democrats when they were voting on wallstreet reform and re-regulation of?

They defeated Bennett of Utah. (among others)

Senator Robert (Bob) Bennett, Utah Republican was denied re-nomination Saturday after serving three terms in office, and the Utah Tea Party has been credited with pushing him out. Bennett voted for the bank bailout and that vote (among others) had Utah’s Tea Party and many Utah Republicans up in arms.

The reason they did not rally around Dodd/Frank is because it was a terrible bill that hasn't stopped any of the practices they rallied against. It's institutionalizes Too big to fail as opposed to outright bans it.

You have no clue what their agenda is. No, let me take that back. You do but you go out of your way to misrepresent it. My guess from your posts is it's because you dislike their stand that all must sacrifice even the unions.

You say that they didn't do what they said they would do and then complain that they did what they said they would do.

Is there a list showing the ranking of the all the targets of their survey.

Is there a list showing the ranking of the all the targets of their survey.

The target was not the Tea Party, since the survey started in 2006. They called back the people they polled from the religious survey and asked them how the felt about the Tea Party. Pretty hard to have an agenda when the survey was before the agenda could exist.

Nope...you just say I misrepresent it and you offer absolutely no facts to support that...How many teaparty rallies have you attended perry ? I attended 4 prior to the election and NOT A SINGLE SPEAKER spoke of attacking t he middleclass...attacking the working class, no talk of protecting the rich and cutting their taxs and corporate taxs...it was ALL ABOUT OBAMACARE....as I walked around the rallies...there were no silk shirts and 2,000 suits there...there were short and tshirt wearing working class senior citizens.....they werent there to assure the teaparty stuck it in the bottom of all working class and middleclass and give gadzillions in tax cuts to the rich corporations....your just plain wrong perry period

No I did not say that. Don't misquote me.

I didn't misquote anything. You complained that you didn't think they did what they promised. Their position was NO new taxes unless they were more than offset with cuts.

That's what we got. Yours was just a rant.

You know that I've done it more than once with one of your misstatements.

Sorry, there is no making heads or tails of this. Just another baseless rant.

They did get an offset in spending cuts. If you want to be rude and not be critical of your own people fine. The Republicans and a few Tea Partiers got on stage in Iowa and said they would not support tax increases even at a 10-1 spending cut to tax increase ration. If you don't think this counters what you just said you are so full of bias I can only hope Independents come on here and see this argument. We need to cut spending especially mandatory; I am not an extremist liberal. I want what is best for our country.

Its unfortunate that so many of the conservative son DP are so unreasonable. There are some good conservative ideas and many conservative I know in real life, who hold the same philosophies but are willing to work together to get some of what they want. No one is getting everything.

It's rude to point out your conflicting statements? They did what they said they would do. No tax increases without immediate cuts. Say that you disagree with them if you want but you can't say they didn't do what they said they would do. Even if it hadn't happened they still held their position on that.

I really care less what the Republicans say. As far as the Tea Party goes they know that promises of future cuts are absolutely worthless. We got none of that in the debt deal. That was their stated position and that is what we got. Pretty impressive considering how they aren't even officially represented in congress.

There will be no "future promises of cuts". Agreeing to anything less is just more of what got us into this mess.

They were getting cuts. They would have gotten a lot more if they agreed to let end some tax cuts.

Funny...I can't find anybody who admits to voting for Obama! Or anybody who says they will vote for him in 2012.

What does this poll prove? Not knowing how the questions were phrased and not having any information on the sample polled, it means nothing.

The Tea Party is a way of thinking, a concept of individual freedom as expressed by our founders in the Declaration and Constitution. There is no personal freedom without economic freedom. The only reason Obama and the Democrate Congress forced Obamacare down our throats was to gain control over every aspect of our lives. If the government has control over our health care and our money (they're trying to get our guns) then where is our freedom?
