In an op-ed article in the New York Times, Robert D. Putnam, a professor of public policy at Harvard, and David E. Campbell, a political scientist at Notre Dame, say they have collected data indicating that the tea party is "less popular than much maligned groups like 'atheists' and 'Muslims.'"

But Campbell says the tea party was really an afterthought in their research.

"We didn't go into this study to look at the tea party," Campbell said in an interview with The Ticket.

One of their more surprising findings, Campbell concedes, (and one drawing national attention) is that the tea party drew a lower approval rating than Muslims and atheists. That put the tea party below 23 other entries--including Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, Republicans and Democrats--that the professors included on their survey of "a representative sample of 3,000 Americans."

Huh. I know I hate the tea party, but I had no idea that was a popular belief.

I suppose this is why they gained so may seats but an Atheist would have a hard time winning one even with a 20 point head start. (that's not a knock on Atheists, I care less what people believe. I'm just noting it's very hard for an avowed Atheist to win an election outside of some small pockets)

Why is this finding surprising? Attendance at Tea Party events has been in sharp decline since the mid-terms. America is waking up to the fact that it's maybe not such a good idea to give ignorant extremists a lot of power.

I saw another thread about their slipping popularity, but this really puts it in perspective.

I always wondered what would happen if I went to a Tea Party rally dressed up like a Redcoat... I might not have the chance to see much longer.

When Texans are asked, "did you vote for Ron Paul?" Majority of replies, "nope not me." But he gets elected every time. Strange. We shall see in 2012 if it turns out the same with the TP. And fact is "the lower current attendance numbers" right now is pretty standard. Let's see what happens closer to election time.

Why do you hate Americans who express their opinions publically?

He doesnt, he hates the tea party. Lot's of Americans express their opinions publicly yet he does not hate them per se.

Im pretty sure he just disagrees with their message. Probably how you do not like how socialists, or communists, or and form of leftist protest you probably dont actually "hate them" you probably just disagree with the message they are spreading

The Tea party is made up of regular Americans.

As I pointed out, attacking Tea Partiers will blow in the Left's face, but hey...more power to yuz!

I hate socialists and communists. Socialists and communists want to take away my liberties. I hate anyone that wants to take away my liberties.

I LOVE the Tea Party. They just might save us all! (Just not in the way they think!)

I started this same topic a few days ago, it has been presented here better than I did in my topic. The fact that they didn't focus on the Tea Party makes any bias less plausible; and I'm glad you brought that up.

I hate socialists and communists.
Do you actually hate them? DO you hate me? I dont want to take away your liberties... I think the 50's propaganda got to ya....
I disagree with the Tea Party's message but i dont hate THEM. I hate their message but not the people....

Socialists and communists want to take away my liberties.
:doh
No................ We..................... Dont.................
Speaking as a socialist:
Dont wanna take your property, dont wanna take your freedom of speech, dont wanna take your freedom of press, dont wanna take the right for you to make money, dont wanna take your right to choose a job, dont wanna take any of your liberties...

I hate anyone that wants to take away my liberties.
:scared:

I thought too many Americans were hopelessly backward after they had elected G. W. Bush two times. Now, there is hope they are getting wiser. May be they will not choose another Republican in 2012.

(bold mine)

Ok, "independent'. I bet you don't know what independent means in a political lean context. Tell us.

I give this phony BS as much credibility as I do palm readers. You can't trust s couple of radical Leftists on any subject.

The Tea Party is an Idea more than a solid group you can point to and make hateful unprovable claims about.

I am sure that Liberals who go out of their way to spread hate and never have a kind word to say about abyone that doesn't follow the party line are out making up things that are not true about the Tea Party, I have seen Obama do it as well as most Liberal talking heads on the Obamedia.

All groups with "good ideas" it seems become railroaded by the extremists.

To mind comes the Sierra Club. Good idea of keeping our enviornment clean. I hate lazy arses who trash my wilderness but soon the club was taken over by the extremists.

Same thing with the Tea Party when the Palin camp jumped onto the stage.

Scum rises in a pond and often in groups such as this.

Seems to me that most that take this position can't even honestly state their message. IMO are just a Pavlovian response.

Or perhaps we could just reject the utter, mindless dogmatism responsible for people conforming to an ideology so thoroughly that their very identity is wrapped up in it?

I don't care whether it is "socialist", "Libertarian", "conservative" "tea partier" or "anarcho-syndicalist", if what rolls off people's tongues (or fingers in the case of the medium we are using here) amounts to nothing but the recitation of hackneyed, conformist talking points, then why bother?

I see about everything except the basis of the study; the questions asked, the respondents demographics, cross tabs, etc etc. You know the things that show whether the study had merit or not. There is NO empirical evidence available to examine the findings. Big red flag there.

In all seriousness, what was good about the tea party even before "extremists"? What was their message?
It seemed pretty much to be nothing more than the old republican base from the very start - indifferent to the militia group of the 90's under Clinton.
