The House vote on Boehner's debt ceiling plan has been postponed. Some are speculating that the reason for the postponement is that Boehner doesn't have enough votes to pass it. It looks like the Tea Party is eating the Republican party alive. Perhaps Boehner will have to be a little more moderate and try to pass a plan that can get the support of some Democrats.

John Boehner Yanks Debt Ceiling Bill, House Vote Postponed

WASHINGTON -- House GOP leadership announced abruptly on Thursday evening that they were suspending a vote on Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) debt ceiling proposal, signaling in the process that the GOP lacked the votes to pass the package.

The news came just minutes before party leadership was set to hold a 5:30 p.m. vote on the proposal, which would cut roughly $915 billion in spending over the next ten years but only raise the debt ceiling through the end of the calendar year.

Congressional aides were scrambling to figure out just when the vote would be rescheduled for -- the House for now will consider eight smaller measures first -- but a spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said that a vote on Boehner's proposal would still take place on Thursday night.

Whether that is enough time for the Speaker to convince a few more Republicans to support him is unclear. Informal whip counts had 25 Republicans and the full Democratic caucus opposing the measure, which would put it short of the 216 votes needed for passage.

Apparently the votes aren't there. I'm thinking he was counting on the Blue Dogs.

No, he wasn't counting on the bluedogs. There aren't many left anyway. He thought he could pass this ultra-right piece of **** plan by appealing to the Tea Party, but it wasn't far-right enough for the insane Tea Party caucus. He may need Dems now. But he'll have to change that plan quite a bit for their support

Looks like the Boehner shrunk and withered on this one.

Looks like the Boehner shrunk and withered on this one.

Boehner's days as SOTH are numbered. The once proud Republican party has regressed to a group of ignorant thugs. The Republicans will learn to despise the teabaggers.

Although those who stood against the Boehner bill may feel that they demonstrated strength in doing so, regardless of whether the legislation is salvaged later today, the Speaker's negotiating leverage has been damaged. He is in a weaker position and that weakness will have consequences for the Republicans. No amount of spin can mask the weakness that was exposed by the events in the House. No amount of spin can prevent that weakness from being exploited.

As legislation will require a greater number of Democratic votes to pass the House due to the need to write off the hardliners and also compensate for other Republicans who could be lost in seeking to bring Democrats on board, even greater concessions to the Democratic Party position will likely be needed than would otherwise have been the case in any compromise vehicle. More than likely, that will translate into less 10-year budget savings, which continue to be whittled down from the approximately $3.7 trillion figure that had been within reach. The irony will be that some of the very Congressmen who claimed to want far more deficit reduction will, by overreaching, have paved the way for much less deficit reduction than would otherwise have been the case. In turn, that development will increase prospects of a credit rating downgrade for the U.S., which would lead to higher interest costs and perhaps completely wipe out any of the savings in the compromise legislation. Very likely, the net 10-year savings after considering higher interest expenses may well fall short of $1 trillion in a best case scenario.

Fact ... The federal tax revenues are at their lowest level in decades!

Most of our deficit problem is caused by the unfunded Bush tax cuts, two unfunded major wars, and other unfunded Republican spending such as the Medicare prescription drug program designed for big Pharma and whisked through by republicans.

We are down to ... forcing Medicare recipients to pay more for health care out of their own pockets or minimal raise in taxes on the wealthiest citizens ... come on!

Seriously ... when the middle class watches their 401k evaporate after next week ... all for this political grandstanding by Republicans.

Republicans are playing a wicked game as the expense of our country and the middle class.

The politicians salaries, healthcare benefits, and retirement should be at the bottom of the list to be paid if this country defaults!

That's because employment is at its lowest level in decades. Millions out of work = much less tax revenue.

You can say that about the Tea Party and Republicans.

But Obama ain't exactly getting the heros welcome from the democrats in congress either.

There was nothing in it for the Blue Dogs to vote with the GOP this time since the great majority of polls have shown the majority of voters agree with the balanced approach of cutting spending and eliminating the tax breaks for the wealthy.

Boehner needs to suspend his spray tan and get a clue.

Hey! Tea Party Republicans on this board! Where are you? Why aren't you defending this crap? Where is all the whining about reducing the debt and job creation now?

The teaparty should just bounce Boehner and come totally out of the closet with their agenda...so amerca can swiftly reject them and send them packing....its going to happen eventually, its just going to be a slower process with the boehners whining who arent in charge of anything.

Obama should consider the prospect of using the 14th Amendment to get around the debt ceiling!

It would be justified and possibly political malpractice if he does not use it. Congress has abdicated its constitutional responsibility before the drop dead date that will sink the economy.

The republicans having been bought by a few ... and are holding the American economy and our senior citizens hostage. They are not conservatives ... they always voted for the debt ceiling to be raised for unfunded corporate wars, wind falls for big Pharma, tax breaks for the wealthiest ... they are using social security and medicare as hostage to give a blank check to corporate intersts of a few that do not benefit American interests.

Hopefully Obama will use his presidential authority stop this train if an agreement is not reached.

Last week I moved a significant portion of my 401k into cash ... will buy back when it at bottom if I think it will recover.

I am just an upper middle class professional cerebral schmuck ... I am trying to maintain financial security while working 50+ hours providing professional healthcare and avoid the republican jihadist grandstanding that will tank us fast.

What is the difference ... a terrorist hi jacking a plane hoping for 82 virgins or a terrorist holding an economy hostage hoping to be use the right hand of "God" to appease the corporations he legislates so a few become rich and the "dim lack of logic bible bangers voting base" he manipulates in order to support his agenda.

The provision at the heart of the constitutional debate, Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, states: “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payments of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.”

Obama is a constitutional lawyer. He has acquiesced and reached across the aisle far too often at the expense of our country ... from corporate personhood to public option in the HCR to republican ethical violations.

CBO scores Boehner’s new bill: $22 billion in savings this year, $917 billion over 10 years « Hot Air

CBO Scoring of Boehner's new bill. The hyperventilating on this thread is laughable. It does not save enough.
The tea party may not be in charge but wanting more than 90billion in cuts a year is admirable.

By the by, where is the democrat plan? Or maybe Obama's?

I am sure if you searched the internet, you can find one.. You may have to expand your search to something other than Fox News, Heritage foundation, Newsmax, and other rightwing smear outlets..

I'll give you a hint.. It was put out by Harry Reid..

I would agree with this, but there would be hell to pay and you know it.. Look at the crap he took for the mandate and it wasn't even his idea.. Republicans threw tantrum over the mandate, an idea that was originally republican..

Reids plan abdicates the Senate from passing a budget for this year and next year, claims 1.7 trillion in savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and using budgetary gimicks for most of the rest.

So they abdicate their duty to pass a budget, claim savings that are going to occur anyway in the military, and use accounting procedures for the rest. Thats not a solution.

Reids plan has just been getting attention the last 2 days.

Oh yes, DM, I get my news sources from a news agregate, Drudge and it includes left and right wing sources and I read both sides. So take your idea that Im misinformed elsewhere.

True DM ... yet if an agreement is not reached and congress abidcated their responsibilities he must be CIC and protect our country.

Yes ... there will be hell to pay and possibly a lost election in 2012 ... yet it is his duty to protect from terrorists ... be it jihadists hoping for virgins or republicans playing a wicked economic game for special interests and corporate personhood.

meaning you want more taxes and more government?

you're left-wing hyperbole and rhetoric will quickly get your post eaten and spewed back out by many of the more experianced members here.

True, so why do we not have an emphasis on job creation? Cutting expenditures will just exasperate the situation.

...except that the man speaks the truth.... of course, the truth gets eaten, but its hard to swallow for some, so it gets spewed back by many of the more ignorant members here in the form of meaningless hot rhetoric...

except, the "woman" in question, speaks nonsense and offers no real content or dialogue of value. "The republicans are terrorists" mantra gets old after a while...

Some more experienced posters might be able to give a reasonable response, but it certainly isn't going to be the likes of you. As one can tell from your weightless response, you have nothing of any merit to contribute.
