Trust me....those on the left will very likely hate anyone the GOP puts up....unless the reasonable wing of the GOP is able to regain control of their party from the radical right-wing.

That seems like a weak reason compared to merely being a Republican coming out of the Bush years. Any Republican would have had a real issue in the 2008 election for the simple fact they were a Republican.

Re: New polls confirm Obama's Democratic base crumbles

John Stossel's recent street interviews showed that a majority of people have no clue about what is going on in Gov. and yet they vote and participate in polls that are reported as being meaningful.

I have said for years before I retired that the issues have become too complex for general public to comprehend, because they either don't care or don't have the time to do the research needed to make informed decisions.

Bur even knowing this there comes a time when the preponderance of eveidence begins to take it's toll.

    It's about that time, fianally.

Obama is still a hell of a lot better than anything that the GOP has to offer, so I suspect that despite what this poll suggests, the left will support Obama come election time.
Yep, that pretty much sums it up for me. Having read up on Obama before the election, I already knew he was a pragmatic centrist. Problem was, the only credible opponent was even worse.

And judging by the potential candidates so far, Obama will once again be the lesser of evils in 2012.

It always boils down to a choice, one over the other. It would be nice to have the perfect candidate, but regardless of some of the claims here, it really is about picking one over the other, even if we don't like either choice all that much.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

Re: New polls confirm Obama's Democratic base crumbles

Just wanted to point out to the OP... that if you look at the greater arc of the past 10 years or so, we have first seen the Republicans become increasingly disillusioned and distant from the GOP, especially the moderates. In the last election we actually saw Republicans not voting for lack of choice and walking away feeling ashamed of what their party was offering up.

Now, if what you're suggesting is true, the same thing is happening to the Democrats. A lot of people voted for Obama because he was sort of the last hope and he seemed promising. Now further dreams have been dashed.

Instead of turning this into a one-up on your opposition, I think it would be more worthy to acknowledge what a sad day it is when Americans, regardless of party, have lost faith in the political system. It shouldn't be this way. We should have pride in our political process, and there should be at least one candidate that people can identify with.

Our government and its successive administrations are failing us miserably, and it is totally depressing to have to acknowledge it.

Your post made me think of who I would consider an ideal candidate. I think maybe it would be someone that was a cross between Ron Paul on foreign policy, FDR on domestic policy, and Paul Krugmann on the economy.

Seen anyone like that around? If not, I'm going to be stuck with voting for Obama again.

It shows the power of headlines and late night talk shows. For many people, that's all the exposure they get.

    There's a side that's compromising? LOL.

Up until recently you had the GOP saying "we won't agree to anything that raises taxes" and Obama saying "I hope people can check their ultamatums at the door and stop the partisan posturing... and oh yeah, "we won't agree to anything that doesn't raise taxes."
