That's OSHA. But I know plenty of people in the auto working field. It's not terribly uncommon to have a beer at lunch. By that I mean that while not everyone does it, it's not so rare event as people would be shocked to hear it. Then again, it's usually just a beer with lunch or something. Not getting hammered and getting high (though I don't know if these people were drinking copious amounts of beer).

The workers are allowed an appeal. That was agreed to in contract. They are going to excercise that. That's all. The intention is not to say that "I should be allowed to be drunk and high on the job", as much as it is to say "I know I ****ed up, it won't happen again, please can I have my job back".

No. The union should be protecting the workers over all. They are putting all the line workers at risk by defending these actions. These guys are putting the livelyhood of everyone they work around at risk.

Appeal was agreed to in the contract. The fired workers have requested that the Union (which they pay dues to and is supposed to represent them should the appeal be necessary) and enact the appeal. There's nothing wrong. The company can still say that they're fired as there is plenty of proof of them having violated worker safety and conduct. Or they can pity them and give them a second chance. But none of this is to actually gain the ability to drink beer while on the job.

Demonstrating once again the fruitless uselessness of Unions!

if these people are hired back then I think maybe it will show the usefullness of it. Hell, even having the ability to appeal in the first place is a bit of a step up from no union.

They don't do that anymore. They used to. My grandpa is an electrician (union) in St. Louis, worked for Anheuser-Busch back in the day. They essentially had stuff like that. But I don't think that it being brought back will do anything in demonstrating usefulness of union. I think these people having a chance to appeal in general is demonstration of that.

The summer before my Senior year in School I worked 3rd shift at a plant that build napalmm and a bout half the shipping crew were either drunk or stoned every day.

It got so bad thay had to stop filling the bombs at the plant.

This UAW problem needs to have the Feds step in and demand everyone caught be fired and very UAW official also fired, and anyone who can be charged with a crime arrested.

How many lives do these people put at risk doing this?
