Who was Obama protecting when he said:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I doubt it. The American people would judge who was responsible and vote accordingly.

How will anyone know? How do you know? What is it based on other than democrats are good and republicans are evil. I am more ambivalent so it is harder to form an opinion on who screwed the pooch on this one.

Well, I wasn't here then, but I was just as against the spending by Bush in 2000, AND in 2004, and in 2007, 08.. He spent like a democrat, and I was vocal about it.

What makes me absolutely laugh is how well the media clowns have pushed this message. We need to raise our credit to be more credit worthy.. LOL It's laughable so many have fallen for it, hook-line-n-sinker...

I thought most are against raising the debt limit?

They are against raising taxes, only 34% support it.

Laugh when your retirement all but disappears in early August...

If you go over your credit limit, what does your credit card company do? They raise your interest rate.

Government is fortunate enough to be able to set its own credit limit. If they don't raise it and don't pay off the debt, their credit rating will be lowered, and interest rates will go up and as a result the DEBT will actually RISE, not shrink.

In 1979, due to a technical error, $120,000,000 in bonds didn't get paid on time. The interest rate charged to the US government on ALL of its debt rose by .6% - resulting in about an $80 BILLION addition to the national debt.

Have you paid attention to what world stock markets did when they thought a tiny nation like Greece was going to default on its debt? They tanked, only recovering when the EU bailed them out.

What do you think will happen if we don't pay our debt? Why do you think everything will just be fine when history shows you otherwise?

yes, they will judge the incumbents as those at fault.

Many of the republicans this go round were voted in on stopping the spending, these folks may see a light at the end of the tunnel through all this.

What do you think will happen if we do not show the world a different slope in deficit spending? Do you think it is wise to wait until the world does to us what they are doing to several nations in Europe? Do you think it is reasonable that U.S.' s bond holders will stay asleep to the fed buying the new debt that the administration is creating to pay for a deficit about 10% of GDP? Do you understand what it means when we have a slow growth economy in the face of huge monetary and fiscal stimulus?

How about an adult debate on the issues. To talk about the debt ceiling in the abstract is babyish.
