Public Wants Changes in Entitlements, Not Changes in Benefits

Despite rising public concern about the federal budget deficit, Americans favor keeping Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are rather than taking steps to reduce the budget deficit (by 60% vs. 32%).

Maybe its me but you cant complain about spending while at the same time want to keep the income retribution schemes. Its like wanting to eat cake but at the same time complain that it has fattening sugar. "Eat something you skinny bitch!"

It's going to be messy that's for sure. That's why entitlement policies need to be carefully thought out, and exit strategies employed..

We need to start letting people opt of Social Security, (SS) and allow private companies to replace SS at a reasonable rates using actuarial tables to determine at what age benefits should be paid and at what amount.

All people ubder 50 now should be placed on such a plan, and SS retirement age raised to a low of 67 and a high of 70.

If you want to destroy the faith that lots of average working people have in their institution of government, this is a very good start.

Just pop the cap for heavens sake.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers
