Harvard: July 4th Parades Are Right-Wing

No, but it must be a common experience. :p

Waving my arms around wildly with my hair flying in my face isn't exactly my idea of sexy-happy-fun-time. But I guess there's a reason they become conductors, eh? :2razz:

They call it "eargasm", tess...gosh! :p

A sad day for Harvard, A sad day for any democrat who follows this thought

thats a shame, I'm sorry...never too late though

They sometimes set up the fireworks show to correspond to either the classic station or the rock station here. Last year there was WAY too much Bruce Springsteen.

Hopefully NOT Born in the USA...

Conservatives are overly patriotic? NO! Liberals are inherently un-patriotic? NO! We are through the looking glass people. Up is down, black is white... WTF is going on! LOLZ

In Indy, they would ALWAYS make sure to include Mellencamp's "Small Town". Got the point of ridiculousness. Especially when they would blend into it from John Philip Sousa.

Oh, no...now that's going to be stuck in my head the rest of the day...

we used to watch the fireworks from the downtown atheneum club, and also from white river.

I think this person at Harvard may also be interpreting the fact that Republicans in general over the past 10 years have been far more supportive of the war efforts on average and therefore appear to be more patriotic, and the fact that Republican leaders and media types will in fact use the American flag quite a bit more for advertising purposes.

waving a flag or watching a parade does not equal patriotism.
But to many conservatives, it does.
And if you dont wave your flag or attend these parades, you are anti-American.

You dont need to wear your patriotism on your sleeve. Doing this does NOTHING.

The issue seems to stem from perceived...elitism....or attributing a lower set of characteristics onto someone else with these events, these gestures. Either side feels like there is unjustified self-aggrandizement going on.

I think to some people waving the flags is thus patriotism, but I think a lot of people are merely suggesting that the act of waving a flag is an expression of patriotism and also should not be scoffed at (the patriotism on one's sleeve comment, for example). During the counter-culture years-and its current residual effects in small pockets of American political life, the American political left had to answer to a lot of uneasy questions and associations (justified or no).

Meanwhile a lot of liberals, who are simply living their lives like anyone else, are justified in asking those on the political right on what justified grounds are they legitimately associated with unpatriotic behavior or sentiment.

Better be some fireworks here in DC... 4th of July is fun. I felt slightly weird spending the last one in Canada. Went to Toronto to see a concert.

Someone had this as their sig. Im not sure if it was here at DP or somewhere else, but im a strong believer in it:

Patriotism is not waving a flag, it's living an idea.

To me, being a patriot isn't about waving a flag, although it could be. No, to me as a Canadian Citizen living in the United States of America, it means something else. To me I will always love the country of my birth, and I would defend her against all enemies, but I also love the USA, and would defend her as well. So it seems that partiotism is more about living the idea, or the deep seeded, most heart felt understanding that you really are part of something special, and that this something is worth even your life to protect. That doesn't mean you have to be a liberal, or conservative, or democrat or republican. It's not a label, it's a state of being.

Tim-

does this mean that when this news gets out to the liberal masses they will be attacking Independance Day like they do CHIRSTmas

Yeah, this was not the sort of thread I was expecting, but nevertheless surprising.

Democrats need to change that image, and have done some slow progress toward that goal of appearing more celebratory of the American heritage and its exceptionalism.

Dems have tried to flip in the Patriotism switch, but their definition of Patriotism is slightly different. Paying large taxes is patriotic. They have a Patriotic Flag Burning Office.

After 911 the left flipped the Patriotism switch, after decades of hostility to our military, and intel services. Then they turned it off because they could see it was getting them nowhere.

Dems malign our Founding Fathers.

They have a huge hurdle to jump to be considered a Patriotic party.

Only if you consider patriotism to be a jingoistic kneejerk sort of neo fascism.

I don't.

You cannot piss all over Patriotism and then turn around and expect people to believe you are patriotic.

You cannot have representatives vote to send soldiers to war, and then stab them in the back when they need your support most. In's not only unpatriotic what the Left in Congress and their vile followers pulled (except Liebermann), it was treasonous... disgusting.
