FAIRFAX, Va. -- Resort-style swimming pools with fountains and heated spas, billiards rooms, granite counter tops, ceramic tile, indoor basketball courts, stainless steel appliances -- many Fairfax County taxpayers cannot afford such luxuries. But they are paying for these amenities for use by low-income residents who live in subsidized housing in affluent neighborhoods.

"If the occupants of these homes improve their lives financially, they will be forced to move out. And the housing they could afford without the taxpayer subsidy is well below the quality of these homes," he said.
630 WMAL: Stimulating Talk – Breaking News

That last part is the most important point made. I say sell the units and quit subsidizing folks like this. I believe this is a perfect example of using tax payer funds to bribe folks for votes.

Is it bad that I read FFX as Final Fantasy 10?

I like the subsidized housing here in Cheyenne. It is safe, clean, and efficient... and absolutely nothing else.

Rather have subsidies and controlled housing than give millionaires tax breaks on private planes and bankers the ability to avoid paying taxes.

What right do those poor folks have to the rich folks money? Because you feel sorry for them?

Can I come take $40 out of your bank account then? I could use some cash.

Lol...

Fairfax was the first county in the United States to reach a six-figure median household income, and has the second-highest median household income of any local jurisdiction in the United States after neighbor Loudoun County.[1][2]

With a gross county product of about $95 billion, the economy of Fairfax County is larger than that of Morocco.

The county is home to seven Fortune 500 company headquarters,[29] 11 Hispanic 500 companies,[30]

The average weekly wage in Fairfax County during the first quarter of 2005 was $1,181, 52% more than the national average.

Another one of MrVicchio's colossal research failures. One of the richest places in the US willingly subsidizes such amenities for its residents.... color us all shocked.

That looks about right yes.

i believe the point about concentrating poverty is valid. the county owns those units, and it's ridiculous for herrity to claim that most of the county's taxpayers can't afford pools or granite countertops.

Be that as it may, why should the people subsidize such luxury? Honestly?

There is no research failure. Only a failure of you to explain why the tax payers should be funding such... amenities for those that cannot afford it.

because building entire neighborhoods of subsidized housing stinks. don't tell me you've never seen public housing that's been all boarded up?

i really think that mixing classes is good for everyone involved. and remember, policemen and fire fighters and teachers get subsidized as well. if the people of the county have issues, they can deal with this.

I agree that the voters will have to decide this. I also agree Section 8 style housing is crap. However, while FF is a very wealthy area, remember, not everyone there is a rich, and not everyone is poor enough to get such programs... what about thos efolks that are inbetween? they pay taxes, but cannot afford the good stuff.. how do they factor in here?

Another under reported Obama gaffe

Michelle Malkin » Did Obama Forget Those Private Jet Tax Breaks He Just Denounced Were Created By His Own Stimulus Plan?
The chief economic culprit of President Obama’s Wednesday press conference was undoubtedly “corporate jets.” He mentioned them on at least six occasions, each time offering their owners as an example of a group that should be paying more in taxes.
“I think it’s only fair to ask an oil company or a corporate jet owner that has done so well,” the president stated at one point, “to give up that tax break that no other business enjoys.”
But the corporate jet tax break to which Obama was referring – called “accelerated depreciation,” and a popular Democratic foil of late – was created by his own stimulus package.

Our system is all screwed up. For example, unless a single mother has an extremely well paying job she's better off having no job at all.

The problem is that if these people move up the income ladder and become disqualified for subsidized housing benefits, they lose the nice surroundings.

It creates a perverse incentive to never get off the subsidy.
