House rebukes Obama over Libya - The Oval: Tracking the Obama presidency

The U.S. House rebuked President Obama over Libya policy today, voting down a proposed resolution that would grant him authority for the military operation against Moammar Gadhafi.

War critics defeated authorization by an overwhelming vote of 295-123, with 70 fellow Democrats going against the president.

House members are considering a resolution that would cut off some funds for the military operation, in protest of Obama's refusal to seek congressional approval for the action.

SoS Clinton advised against it, but as so many here have stated - we can't police the whole world.

Libya conflict: House rebukes Obama on Libya, but won't cut funds - latimes.com

Reporting from Washington— The House of Representatives refused to either endorse or curtail U.S. involvement in Libya, delivering a mixed message Friday that highlighted deep divisions surrounding the issue.

By an overwhelming margin, lawmakers refused to sanction U.S. participation in a NATO campaign of airstrikes in the North African country, a vote that amounted to a rare, bipartisan rebuke of a president's foreign policy during an active military conflict.

Minutes later, however, a Republican-led effort to try to curb financial support for U.S. involvement also failed. A majority of Democrats and a group of Republicans rejected the bill to cut funding for combat activities — surprising GOP leaders, who tailored the bill at the last minute to suit the rank and file.

Both measures were largely symbolic. The first measure, which would have authorized U.S. involvement, was not expected to pass the Republican-led House, where fiscal conservatives and "tea party" freshmen have expressed increased skepticism about stretching the military thin.

The second bill, to cut off funding, had virtually no chance of passing the Senate, much less garnering a presidential signature.

Good job. I agree with this 100%.
Could of used this you know back in 03

And thats perfectly fine.

So America, from now on, please stop reffering to yourself as "leader of the free world". Please stop "spreading democracy" and for the love of god stop going around the world bombing poor people.

Sincerely, the rest of the world now that republicans all of a sudden have a problem with the war powers act.

I totally agree … now the next step is to cut off foreign aide to those countries as well . ...after all there is no need to be known as the most charitable country either right ??

Well that all really depends, are you doing it to be genuinely charitable, or are you doing it to gain influence over that countries domestic and international affairs and policies... :ssst:

Huh? Haven't Republicans generally FOLLOWED the War Powers Act???

Reagan certainly didnt get any congressional approval to do almost EXACTLY THE SAME THING in 1986 against Libya, hell he was even rebuked by the United Nations general assembly.

That's right and Canada should be the first ones knocked off the tit.

You're really going to start that **** again, why do you come here? I mean honestly? It certainly isn't to have honest debate (most of the time anyway).

What?

I'm just agreeing with Barbarian, that we need to cut off the handouts.

How long did that operation take?

And who cares what the UNGA says?

This is true and about time we tend to our own business and keep our nose out of that of others. Can we do that? I don't know. We've been doing it so long we're beginning to believe we're the Kingpin country of the world. We're under the illusion that countries that have been around for centuries should just stop and do what we tell them to, and being the baby on the block just doesn't cut it with most of them.... Go figure.

I have various views on this but I'll start here. Typical cowardly move on the part of Congress. If you believe this was done improperly, the first vote would have been correct. If those are your views, the second vote is saying that you do not actually believe what you said in the first vote.

Well, to be fair, you've taken some shots in this thread yourself, Jet. Adpst has said nothing about about Canada that was any more inflammatory, in fact less so (in my opinion), than your posts about the US.

Think of how much better shape our country would be in if we helped our own citizens rather than other countries.

i would rather give it to the laziest american than send it over seas and have it "misplaced" and not used for its inteded purpose and be spent on arms to kill our young men and women serving this country.

We could begin doing that by pulling out of the UN.

Why should he? This ranks right up there with "I will fart in your general direction".

I agree. It's not enough to hold a session just to say "Hey, we don't agree with you." Well, actually DO something about it. Pull the funding out from under his feet.
