CAIRO — Egypt's military rulers told human rights advocates Monday that at least 7,000 civilians have been sentenced to prison terms by military courts since Hosni Mubarak was ousted — an astoundingly high number likely to fuel debate over how much the revolution has changed the country.

Obama's choice had little to do with the civil liberties of the Egyptian people. Mubarak had outlived his usefulness when he lost control of the country and supporting the new rulers put America in a better position. The Egyptians can chart their own course, the role of the president is to focus on our own national interests.
