It's not the government's job to find ways to bring down government costs and increase the welfare of the people? Are you serious?

This is what you get when you only read news from conservative new sources. It's rots your brain.

If you want to evaluate whether or not it is valid research, you have to have more than a little hit piece. And if we're bitching about government spending, ending our aggressive, interventionist wars will save a hell of a lot more than cutting out science research will ever do.
They are looking at drug interventions! They are looking into treatment! Why can't anyone go read the studies for themselves? Is everyone such a ****ing sheep that they have to be told what the study does by an article with a clear agenda to distort and make fun of the work?

Honest to god, I'm sick and tired of these kinds of idiotic threads that serve no purpose but for someone to post a partisan thread from a partisan source and make a partisan argument without ever actually going and looking into it themselves. The OP of this damn thread would buy a bridge in the Sahara if Sarah Palin was the one selling it.

In what distorted universe does the government who writes drug law not have the right to do research into investigating the effects of drugs on millions? Why would you trust a private company to do a proper study anyways?

I was just saying that we should look into it first before you decide to cut anything. Fact of the matter is the government and our society at large has great interest in scientific research, from base science to medicine to various forms of engineering. We're a technological not industrial economy now and to support that you must have a constant flux of science. There are a lot of science hit pieces out there now saying "they spent a million dollars to study bears...OMGWTFBBQ!!!!one!one!!!!!!" But the people spouting out about a million here or a million there tend to have no training in scientific research nor do they investigate the purpose and means of the investigation. A million doesn't even show up on the debt, you have to hit bigger things. Maybe instead of bitching about a million on science research, they should bitch about the TRILLIONS on wars, the BILLIONS on subsidies to industries like the oil industry or look at ways to clear up bureaucracy inefficiencies in necessary departments as well as scaling back the government in appropriate places.

You hit the point on the head.

How idiotic is it to support policy that costs hundreds of millions of dollars to incarcerate drug addicts but then throw a fricken hissyfit over $360,000 a year in research for substance abuse treatment that could yield results which save millions upon millions?

And these people have the ****ing gull to call themselves "fiscal conservatives".

This thread is a joke and those people and the OP should be embarrassed as ****.

You won't find fiscal conservatives in the Republocrats. Those who call themselves such merely mean that they want to cut all the programs they don't agree with, but are more than happy to expand the size, scope, and intervention of government in other areas that suit their needs.

Indeed. This is a country of ****ing mindless sheep that run to their partisan shepherds to be told what to think. This thread is a perfect example of how little thought people actually give to what they are told. Absolutely pathetic.

Americans long ago gave up critical thinking. It's easier to echo what Fox News or MSNBC tells you to echo than to do the research for yourself. I mean, that's work.

"I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe . . . Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant; give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy."

Anyone remember the nationwide ad campaign ran against the stimulus because it spent money on researching the breeding habits of fruit flies?

Fruit flies are very useful for genetics research because of their very regular/predictable and very short lifespan.

    Gotta love the anti-science crowd.
