Navy Fights Mickey Mouse for SEALs Trademark

Okay why is this important you ask. I just think it's interesting that the Disney folks think it's okay to Trademark a group of Heroes Name.

Seal Team 6 like the Screaming Eagles should own their own name.

Doesn't Disney make enough money with Fantasy? Why do they feel the need to profit from the efforts of our elite military.

SEAL Team 6 isn’t going down without a fight.

The Navy is challenging Disney’s attempt to trademark the name of the elite squad responsible for taking out the world’s most wanted terrorist.

On May 3, just two days after Usama bin Laden was killed in a raid on the Al Qaeda leader’s Pakistan compound, Disney filed trademark applications to use the name "SEAL Team 6" on everything from entertainment, toys, video games, clothing, footwear -- even Christmas ornaments and snow globes.
I think the SEALs can take him.

Why are you against business rights?

BS! Capitalism is not dependent on intellectual property rights nor vice versa.

I think it is funny that Disney is screwing the government that has extended their property rights to ridiculous lengths. There is absolutely no reason why any creative person needs life plus 70 years to induce him to create.

There's no way in hell he government will allow Disney to trademark the name, or allow anyone else to trademark the name of a real military unit. National security concerns alone will impede such attempts.
Also, we need to legalize recreational drugs and prostitution.

I don't agree with you. People should profit off of their creative content. They should also have control of it as well.

But the reason why Disney can't trademark Seal Team 6 is because its the name of a government military unit, and therefore in the public domain already.
Also, we need to legalize recreational drugs and prostitution.

Wait. What national security concern? Are we placed in greater danger by Disney selling SEAL Team 6 action figures?

To clarify: I think Disney should and will lose this trademark fight, but even if they win I'm still not sure why it should bother me in the least.

So you're ok with the government stepping in and forcing a restriction on business (on a behavior that causes no harm to anybody) as long as it's "right."
