They should profit off of it for 70 years after they are dead? The extension had nothing to do with rewarding artists. The creative force that spawned the works had long become worm poop. Congress extended it to benefit their lazy, yet influential heirs.

And in the case of Disney, here is a man, family and company that grew wealthy off of turning public domain works into their property. It is really quite perverse for their defenders to pretend that there is any motive at play other greed..

The length of the copyright is entirely irrelevant to the topic.

"Seal Team 6" is almost certainly considered a phrase that is in the public domain. If so, the trademark application will be denied.

Quite frankly, in recent years, there has been an attempt to push the frontiers of what is subject to intellectual property protection e.g., attempts to patent business processes that would, in the past, have been rejected for such protection. This trademark application represents that trend, which remains underway.

Disney has withdrawn their trademark application. Apparently Mickey feared a visit from the real ST6.

It has everything to do with how intellectual property rights should be enforced and whether they inspire or discourage creative works.

Sorry, I did not intend to hijack the thread. I just think it is sort of funny that the government that allowed Disney to screw everyone else is now getting the business.

I don't think mickey will mind giving up the trademark to the Navy. He hasn't been the same since he divorced minnie. After years of marriage, he found out that she was ****ing goofy.

I heard about this a few days ago. I donít think itís a big deal though. Trust me, the Navy will let Disney use it and Disney willÖ.well they wonít mess with Team 6 or the Navy, thatís for sure.

Re: Navy Fights Mickey Mouse for SEALs Trademark

If Disney wants to make SEALTeam six toys then I have no problem with it and at the same time Hasbro, McFarlane Toys, Mattel or any other toy company should be allowed to make those toys as well seeing how this is actual military unit. No company should be allowed to trademark US military units. Now if they want to make fictional characters then they should be able to trademark those at least the character names and bio, not the clothing and gear that character may be wearing. And if the members of SEAL team six are ever reveal then those members should be allowed to work out licensing deals with their names, bios and likeness.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Mickey Surrendered!

Mickey Mouse Surrenders to Navy SEALs in Trademark Battle

Well, that was quick: Mickey Mouse has waved the white flag and surrendered to the real SEAL Team 6.

Disney is withdrawing its applications to trademark the name of the elite Navy squad responsible for killing Usama bin Laden, the Navy said on Wednesday.
