Tenn. Senate OKs ban on teaching of homosexuality

 no idea - but they probably should. as CC and I have already agreed - teach the biology in biology class. the rest can stay out of school.

Hmmm... I don't think we agreed on that.

You keep saying that, but the real world says other wise. When 100s of kids off themselves a year due to intolerance, it becomes an issue.

Xipher, theres MORE STRAIGHT kids off them selves for intolerance than gays

we have schools for educating our kids, not socializing them. that is the job of the family and the community. in particular if we are going to make it difficult for parents and children to escape a particular school system then we have no business trying to impose solutions via the curriculum and presentation of material on controversial subjects such as the one under discussion. that is a way to guarantee backlash, including the law that kickstarted this discussion.

I disagree, fundamentally. Socialization is probably the most important thing kids learn in school.

Ludahai years ago when I was in school...there were no computers, copiers or even hand held calculators. I got thrown out of school at 15 and I could read and write very well and I had extremely good penmanship. I never handed in one piece of paper for homework. My point is that we were taught what was necessary.
My daughter now has to graduate...TWENTY YEAR OLDS that cant write a paragraph that makes sense and doesnt have 50 spelling errors...so someone needs to explain why our kids are being indoctrinated instead of educated.

In Mexico, if the kid does not do the work they don't pass that year. No worries about their feelings. The kid has to do the work.

I am not saying the educational system in Mexico is strong, but that part I like.

It makes the kid do his work with no out.

Depends on whether it's socialization, or socialization, if you get my drift.

I just read his follow up post to his comment... and I agree with his delineation. Haven't read the rest of the thread, yet... and the site is about to go down for 45 minutes for re-indexing, so I will follow up, later.

Yes I could...they said it was a sexual disease they were just learning about...your right the anagram aids was not used then...it was used in the oops not 70s 80s

Impossible, in the beginning they did have a clue as to how it was transmitted.

I disagree kids go to school to learn to read, write and obtain skills that will enable them to make their own choices..go to college, be a plumber etc. Socialization happens naturally by interacting in school, in the playground and in the park.

Different situation. It becomes a topic in school because kids with gay parents are bullied

How do you know a kid with gay parents is bullied?

It sounds like it is on the rules that a kid like that has to be bullied.

Why the assumption?

Im not going to argue the point because I dont know...they didnt say specifically it was aids...I believe to this day it was, they had teams of doctors on this young guy..it wasnt a normal hospital stay..and they told us that they had no specific reason why his organs were failing etc.
There could find no reason this kid was dieing or why his organs were failing

You are older than some of us. Did AIDs exist when you were plowing the field?

AIDS is not the first nor will it be the last STD. Back then pregnancy was the worst thing that could happen. It destroyed lives.

To assume that a parent is just too stupid or ignorant to teach their kids about sex is wrong.

I intend to answer any questions my son has honestly. No embarassment on my part.

Any thing they are telling kids that isnt directly academic. Thats the problem with public education in America...theres not enough time left to do all the social engineering that progressives want and teach the kids what they need to know.
What is the purpose of going into homosexuality in grammar school...to indoctrinate kids that its ok.

This is a standard anti-gay talking point... indocrination. Nothing but absurdity. Academic issues are informational and can encompass a variety is subjects, ranging from math, to science, to art, to history, to sexuality. It is hard to imagine not being able to see that academics go beyond the "3 R's".

I don't have a problem with k-5 not allowing discussion. I do think if a child has homosexual parents and bring it up then there is room for discussion.I have a problem with banning it in middle school

Junior High School for me was 7 - 9

What were you thinking of in those grades?

I compare this to teaching a kid how to drive.

Elemantary kids don't need to know about it at all. Junior high maybe just the basics like the biology. Advanced discussions are saved for high school where the kids are old enough to actually drive the car.

So should schools teach fat kid tolerance, or ugly kid tolerance or stinky kid tolerance ...schools should be teaching reading writing and arithmatic

Schools should absolutely be teaching tolerance along with the 3 R's.

Sure they do. it is called life experience. How do you think little Johnny was made?

ANYone with a penis and a vagina can procreate. That doesn't mean they have information on STDs, sexual orientation issues, contraception, etc...

Middle school is either 6-8 or 7-9, but thats a non issue. When I was in middle school (6th grade) people were doing sexual things . My first sexual experience was when I was 11.

I am not sure lpast. Didn't the doctors trace the original strain back to patient A which was much later than your timeline?

It has no place in school...just like religion and morality. School is for academics

And it is an academic issue. Seems like only folks like you make it a moral issue.

You see I don't understand that at all.

I never cared what anybody thought of me even up through high schoo.

I understood school was to be completed for my life to start.

I don't understand how somebody elses opinion could have an affect on somebody so profoundly. Mental instablility maybe.

The difference is, bullying stopped when you went home. It never stops now due to the internet.

And that's OK with you?

Yes it is to a point. In excess no but it makes weak kids get stronger.

Didn't you ever see Maury Povich show.

If those people hadn't been bullied in school, they never would have gotten skinnier, smarter, more successful or whatever they did just to show the bully they could.

I wonder what kids would turn out like if there was no bullying at all.

Thats precisely what it is indoctrination, if its not academic its social indoctrination, its absurd to try and make it an academic issue.
Lets get something straight ok...no pun intended :). Not being for Homosexual marriage or homosexual indoctination in elementary school...is NOT ANTI GAY rhetoric, nor does it translate into hating gays. Those accusations roll right off my back, I pay no attention to them..I know what im about and I have no problems telling you how I really feel.
Gays dont want to hear ANYTHING but what they want to hear...you can use this forum for an example if you dont agree and kiss thier behind, your accused of being hateful. If you dont agree with what they want then your anti gay your homophobic, your a hater and they wont like you and will abuse you...that does not intimidate me and wont stop me from saying what I believe.

Actually it has been traced back pre 1970. This doesn't mean though pre 1970 they even had a clue as to what it was much less how it was transmitted. Or even had a theory as to how it was transmitted.
