New York (CNN) -- The head of the International Monetary Fund was arrested early Sunday in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a New York hotel housekeeping employee, police said.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, 62, has been charged with criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment, his attorney Benjamin Brafman said in an e-mail early Sunday.

New York Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said detectives formally arrested Strauss-Kahn at 2:15 a.m.

Police pulled Strauss-Kahn off an Air France flight destined for Paris at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday after the alleged incident, according to Browne.

He was taken into custody and brought to a Manhattan police station for questioning, Browne said.

Hours earlier, Browne said, Strauss-Kahn emerged naked when the 32-year-old hotel employee entered his room to clean it around 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sofitel hotel.

The housekeeping employee said she didn't think anyone was in the luxury $3,000-a-night suite when she entered, Browne said.

Browne said Strauss-Kahn ran after her down the hallway of the suite. The suite has its own foyer, hallway, living room, bathroom, conference room and bedroom.

The woman said Strauss-Kahn pulled her into a bedroom and started attacking her.

She fought him off, she told investigators, but Strauss-Kahn then dragged her into the bathroom and forced himself on her. Police said Strauss-Kahn tried to remove her underwear, but the woman got away.

Innocent until proven guilty.

However, it always renews my faith in law enforcement sometimes when even the head of the planets money (in essense anyway) can be charged with a crime.

Seems he has as an alibi for when the supposed attack happened.

We shall see.. there are rumblings he was set up since he was a serious threat to Sarkozy in the next presidential election.

This will all work out for him in the end.

If you're a french politician, and you HAVEN'T been involved in a sex scandal, true or not.

You're not worth electing

True, the French dont care about such things. Only issue would be him going to jail in the US for years and years.

But as I posted, Euronews over here is saying that his defence is that he was not even in the hotel when it happened. Plus it is a tad convenient that a few days before a very important meeting for the EU and IMF, then suddenly he gets arrested in the US for attempted rape.. not the first time such a thing has happened... wikileaks.

Yes Jet... Innocent until proven guilty.

Interesting to learn the head of the IMF was to run as a Socialist in the next French election... no wonder the organization does more harm than good.

He left his phone at the hotel, but one comment made by someone in the know it seems is he seemed to have left in a hurry. Guess all that chasing and forced sex... Le BJ... or is it La BJ... left him a little behind schedule. Should he be convicted I think he just might be on the receiving end of his actions. They'll call him La Femme Fatal... or is it Le Femme Fatal. He'll be living the socialist dream... eee will be a sharing his wealth, his abundance forcefully with udders. Non?

Is this frog related to Bill Clinton?

The French as far as I have heard, apart from many believing it is not true are not at all pleased with this. This is a purported crime. I admit it sounds incredulous that someone would risk everything in this way but such things sometimes happens and another woman is saying she suffered similarily

A French writer who claims Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulted her nine years ago is to file an official complaint, her lawyer has announced.

Tristane Banon previously described the attack, which happened when she was in her early 20s, in a television programme in 2007, when she called Strauss-Kahn, whose name was bleeped out, a "rutting chimpanzee."

She says she consulted a lawyer at the time, but was persuaded not to take action by her mother, a regional councillor in the Socialist party and friend of the Strauss-Kahn family. Banon is goddaughter to Strauss-Kahn's second wife.

It's either a good set up or true. Wonder if more will come out?

Yes that usually happens .. they come out of the woodwork so to say. Bet the authors books are going to be selling like hot cakes for a while now..

More will come out and we will see what happens. I am sceptical to say the least, considering who, where, and the issues this man is dealing with in the financial world.

The man is followed by controversy, he was sacked from the 2000 administration because of alleged corruption and he was subsequently cleared.

He will have enemies and adversaries- he's left wing and jewish, he's a threat to Sarkozy and he's apparently been doing good things as head of the IMF.

Now however, he's been accused by Tristane Banon of an alleged sexual assault 10 years ago.

In some regards this may clear up quite quickly as his african victim (the chamber maid) has apparently alleged she scratched him during the assault. If he has scratch marks and there's a DNA match (in both directions) he's toast. If not - this may propel him to the French Presidency.

Lol this guy has been ****ing us for years he has only just been arrested??

IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was ordered held without bail on Monday as new details emerged about the alleged sexual assault of a maid at a swanky New York City hotel. Law enforcement sources told FoxNews.com that blood found on bed sheets in the luxury suite in Manhattan’s Sofitel Hotel, where Strauss-Kahn stayed Friday night, could support the sexual assault claim of the alleged victim. A rape kit found DNA evidence on the woman, who sources described as ashamed to report the violent attack. She eventually told law enforcement officials the graphic details. Crime scene investigators found additional evidence at the scene, removing fibers and DNA and swaths of carpet and fabric from the suite for further forensic testing, sources said.

Strauss-Kahn appeared Monday in a New York City courtroom, where prosecutors said the IMF chief may have engaged in similar behavior in the past and should be considered a flight risk. Defense attorneys said Strauss-Kahn denies all charges against him. A Manhattan judge ruled that Strauss-Kahn must remain jailed at least until his next court hearing -- slated for May 20 -- for attempted rape and other charges.

The 32-year-old hotel maid had been a model employee; no complaints had been registered against her in her three years working as a housekeeper at Sofitel hotel, the source said. And she was following protocol when she opened the door to Strauss-Kahn’s room after the noon checkout time on Saturday. Sources said that the IMF chief, who was seen as a viable candidate for president of France, arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday May 11. He was supposed to be on the first flight from New York to Washington, D.C., Saturday morning. He missed his flight but did not arrange a late checkout, law enforcement sources said, and should not have been in the room.

Strauss-Kahn was plucked off an Air France flight by Port Authority police who halted the plane as it was moving down the runway in line for takeoff. When the officers boarded the plane and located the IMF chief in first class, the alleged assaulter tried to resist arrest, sources said. Strauss-Khan, known in some circles as “the great seducer,” was picked out in a police lineup by his accuser on Sunday, authorities said.

A somber-looking Strauss-Kahn, wearing a black jacket and pants and a gray shirt, was later escorted out of the Harlem police precinct where he was being held, his arms behind his back. He was taken to a hospital for the exam requested by prosecutors to obtain more evidence in the case, and then to a Manhattan court early Monday.

The IMF has said they would deny immunity because the alleged assault occurred when Strauss-Kahn was on a personal visit, not a business trip.

Law enforcement sources said Strauss-Kahn appeared to be in such a rush to get out of the hotel he left his cell phone and other personal effects behind in his room.

IMF Chief Ordered Held Without Bail in Sexual Assault Case - FoxNews.com

The chief of the International Monetary Fund is behind bars at Rikers Island after his arraignment on charges of trying to rape a maid, and prosecutors said they were investigating at least one other similar allegation against Dominique Strauss-Kahn at the same hotel.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a likely French presidential candidate and a married father of four whose reputation with women earned him the nickname "the great seducer," was formally charged Monday in the alleged weekend assault.

Strauss-Kahn is accused of attacking a maid who went in to clean his penthouse suite Saturday at a luxury hotel near Times Square. He is charged with attempted rape, sex abuse, a criminal sex act, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. The top count is punishable by five to 25 years in prison.

A source told NBC New York that Strauss-Kahn's semen was found at the scene.

Strauss-Kahn appeared in court Monday rumpled and unshaven; sources told NBC New York he was fed scrambled eggs and toast from a Harlem deli, and then a ham sandwich, while in custody before being taken to Rikers.

Assistant District Attorney John A. McConnell acknowledged in court Monday that New York authorities are investigating at least one other case of "conduct similar to the conduct alleged" at the Sofitel.

It says she recounted the attack, on TV, back in 2007.

So it's not exactly coming out of the wood work

With Dominique Strauss-Kahn locked in a New York police station, the IMF is likely to be sidelined in talks about the European debt crisis, City analysts have warned .

Despite providing billions of euros in funds to Greece, Ireland and more recently Portugal, experts said the IMF could now be distracted by the sex allegations facing Strauss-Kahn, and the power vacuum he has left, damaging its chances of bringing the eurozone's warring factions to a workable conclusion.

His experience is widely perceived to have been crucial as the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, wrestled with the eurozone's biggest crisis since its inception. His absence will increase worries about the IMF's longer-term capacity to promote deals to an increasingly divided Europe.

Nick Bullman, of advisory firm CheckRisk, said Ireland faced losing one of its champions in the negotiations: "Sarkozy and Ireland's taoiseach, Enda Kenny, have not hit it off well and the Strauss-Kahn arrest frees Sarkozy to take a tougher line on Ireland's corporate tax rates," he said.

In Europe he argued vociferously for Greece to be cut more slack as it searched for a solution to its huge debts. A meeting scheduled for Monday with Merkel was expected to involve a heated exchange on Greece, with Merkel taking a harder line.

Strauss-Kahn sex charges likely to isolate IMF in debt crisis talks | Business | The Guardian

The sexual assault charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, have cast uncertainty over global efforts to prevent Europe’s debt crisis from spinning out of control and raise questions about the future of one of the world’s most powerful financial institutions.

At the Washington-based IMF, which makes emergency loans to struggling economies, Strauss-Kahn has been a muscular advocate for aiding Greece, Ireland and Portugal as they have fought to avoid insolvency. A default by a developed European economy would shock the global financial markets and endanger the nascent economic recovery in the United States.

Strauss-Kahn has been a vocal proponent of bailing out ailing European economies even as he has faced considerable resistance in France, where his prescription for severe government spending cuts often has proved deeply unpopular. Still, he has banked on longtime relationships with leading European economic leaders — even his political rival Sarkozy — to help stabilize Europe’s finances.

The arrest of Strauss-Kahn is likely to have ripple effects beyond the United States and Europe.

In the face of the global economic crisis that began in 2008, Strauss-Kahn persuaded rich countries such as the United States to dramatically increase their funding commitments to the IMF, enabling the organization to take on a far more ambitious role in staving off financial crises.

IMF chief arrested in alleged sex assault - The Washington Post

The news has rocked the political class in Paris. Martine Aubry, the Socialist Party leader, called it a “thunderbolt”. Others talked of a “cataclysm”. Even were Mr Strauss-Kahn to be cleared eventually of the charges, the prospect of a court case and the intense scrutiny of his private life would make it virtually impossible for him to return to France to fight a primary. Already, in 2008, he faced an internal IMF investigation into an affair with a fellow member of staff. In the end, the fund concluded that Mr Strauss-Kahn had not abused his position, but he accepted their view that he had made “a serious error of judgment”.

Those Sophisticated Frenchmen - WSJ.com

Gilles Savary, a member of the European Parliament who belongs to Mr. Strauss-Kahn's Socialist Party, wrote on his blog that the arrest of Mr. Strauss-Kahn had hints of American-style hypocrisy. "Everyone knows that Dominique Strauss-Kahn is a libertine, and that he is distinguished from others by the fact that he doesn't try and hide it," he wrote. "In puritanical American [sic], infiltrated by rigorous Protestantism, financial misdeeds are far more tolerated than pleasures of the flesh."

Indeed, a little rape never hurt anyone...

I'd like to see a pic of the victim.

We shall see.. there are rumblings he was set up since he was a serious threat to Sarkozy in the next presidential election.

Michael Savage (barking loon) claimed it was like that scene in the Godfather where that senator was set up by the Corleones by being drugged and put in bed with a dead hooker

Hey at least it was a woman and over the age of 15 too

Nah, he's French, remember? Any sex scandal for a French man running for president will gain the guy votes, not lose them!

This will all work out for him in the end.

If you're a french politician, and you HAVEN'T been involved in a sex scandal, true or not.

You're not worth electing

Rats!!! You beat me to it. :(
