Angry Mob Chases Would-Be Flag Burner Off LSU Campus

Per who's ideology? =Op.

I've edited a bit to make it more fun.

As per the ideology/philosophy behind free speech.

You've an ant hill here because you divide not only statist vs. individual, but also pragmatic vs. philosophical. It's a big mess. You take individual and pragmatic, I take individual and philosophical, finding individual and pragmatic far to close to statist in this instance. Generally, I'm very pragmatic; not so much when it comes to free speech. I'm a free-market wildman when it comes to free speech.

I'm an enigma wrapped in a mystery, covered in bacon. What can I say?

I'm not having a circular argument with you any more. My initial point still stands. You can't compare the flag to the Qu'ran on the basis of the reaction it generates. One is inherently more risky than the other. Period.

I am not basing my opinion on reaction. I am basing it off the fact that they are both offensive to a group of people. Both are wrong. You cannot say its wrong to burn the Qu'ran because it is offensive, but its ok to burn the American flag and noone should be offended. Both are offensive. Both are wrong. Because muslim extremists are ignorant does not make more wrong to offend them. That type of flawed thinking encourages ignorant behavior.

Anyone who truly values free speech does not throw trash at anyone who exercises that right. It honestly makes them look as retarded as the guy who thinks burning flags is a cool way to express anything. So basically, everyone in the OP's story is a loser in my book.

Actually, as soon as I heard they created a Facebook group to counter-protest, I face-palmed.

Does anybody read anymore? I specifically said that everybody (in the U.S.) has the right to burn the flag or the Qu'ran. I also said I don't particularly like the idea of burning either. I further said that increased inherent risk in burning the Qu'ran makes me even more unlikely to burn it than I would be to burn the U.S. flag. I do not base my opinion on the idea of being "offended", because quite frankly I don't care if you're offended. I care what you do with that offense. You would probably scream and yell and call me names from here 'til Sunday. But a radical muslim (and there are a bunch of 'em) would take one look at me burning the Qu'ran and all of a sudden we'd see a rash of attempted attacks. Just like we did when that idiot pastor decided to burn them.

Try not to be such an islamophobe :)

I edited, for awhile, as usual.

lol. I'm really not. I actually do feel like most Muslims are good people, but the squeaky wheel are the radicals and they're trying every day to cause us harm. I'm not gonna encourage it, ya know?

I wish all Muslims were like Dave Chappelle or Shaq. Then I'd spend my entire day on youtube laughing my ass off.

I can't watch Dave Chappelle anymore. I had a drunken night with a former boss which all began with Dave Chappelle season 2 on DVD. I flash back to that night everytime I see Chappelle on TV.

For the record, the idiot pastor did not end up burning them.

Your arguing with me about whether or not burning the Qu'ran or the American flag is equally offensive and wrong. You have been sitting here telling me all afternoon that the American flag is not of equal importance to me as the Qu'ran is to a muslim. You have been sitting here telling me that the Qu'ran symbology is of a higher value that of the American flags.

I have been sitting here telling you that it is not ok for someone to burn the American flag anymore than it is ok for someone to burn the Qu'ran. You cannot sit here and justify one while condemning the other just because some people of one side is willing to resort to violence more than the other. This logic does not apply to any aspect of life and it doesn't apply to this.

LOL sad how a such an innocent mistake could ruin such a great comedian for you.

Actually, he did. Back in March.

Either I didn't make myself clear, or you didn't understand. Neither mean anything me, so I simply don't care who does what, except going after one would have inherently worse consequences than going after the other. I never condemned either one of them, for that matter. I've said multiple times that it's everybody's right to burn both of them, just as I've said over and over again that I would not burn either. My point is that saying the flag is worse because it personally offends you more is silly, because there are bigger issues, which you either refuse to acknowledge or refuse to accept because it would mean admitting you're slightly wrong here.

The logic of consequence applies in every single aspect of life. If you're going to choose between two houses to rob, are you going to go into the house with the old lady confined to her bed, or the house of the NRA-member policeman? You take the path of least consequence. If you're in a hurry do you run the red light or wait for it to go green? You take the path of least consequence. If you have to choose between a job 40 miles away that pays enough to live on, or a job 10 miles away that would require that you sell off assests? You take the path of least consequence.

Please show me where I said that burning the flag was worse.

I have enjoyed reading the back and forth between ya'll over the symbolic impact of burning the Koran Vs. the US Flag.

I would like to add the biggest difference between the two. In the Islamic Culture, the Freedom of the Individual is subservient to Allah, in America, the freedom of the Individual is paramount. What I'm trying to say is, the very idea of "Freedom of Speech" doesn't exist. So the reaction is not because the Koran "Means more" it is because the very concept of Freedom (in this case speech) is alien.

So let's get this straight, some pathetic low life steals a war memorial flag, burns it, get's arrested, and this moron decides to stand in solidarity with him? Glad to see his fellow students come out and let him know what they thought of his... beliefs.

Tossing bottles was uncalled for, but standing up and being heard was aces. Go LSU!

 A stunning victory for angry mobs everywhere! Next time he will think twice before he stands by what he believes in!

Hey, don't be hating on Facebook now. I read an article by some historian a few weeks back where he says that Facebook is going to feature prominently in the history books about the early 21st century. Either way, it's better than throwing trash.

I hate on Web 2.0. I don't feel sorry about doing so. In this instance, it's organizing for the lamest of reasons. Some dork hippy thinks he wants to make some sort of brilliant statement (of course it's not) by burning the flag. Then a bunch of other people think he's being a bit of a jerk, so they organize against him.

I just can't ever imagine myself caring that much. Demonstrations on college campuses are lame to begin with. It's like watching children play with action figures, hoping that one day they can be G.I. Joe or Cobra Commander.

I completely agree with this part.

However. Some of us can actually get to the level of GI Joe, so don't be dissin mah toyz.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are better.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are better.

But would it be worse to burn GI Joes, which represent our military, which represent our country, or to burn ninja turtles, which represent the horrible affects of polution?

No, you're thinking of Captain Planet.
