"Chocolate milk has been unfairly pegged as one of the causes of obesity," said Julie Buric, vice president of marketing for the Milk Processors Education Program.
Others note the nation's child obesity epidemic and say flavored milk simply needs to go.
Eight ounces of white milk served in Los Angeles public schools contains 14 grams of natural sugar or lactose; fat-free chocolate milk has an extra six grams of sugar for a total of 20 grams, while fat-free strawberry milk has a total of 27 grams — the same as eight ounces of Coca-Cola.
"Chocolate milk is soda in drag," said Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services for the Boulder Valley School District in Louisville, Colo., which has banned flavored milk. "It works as a treat in homes, but it doesn't belong in schools."
Flavored milk is also a target of British TV chef Jamie Oliver, who has made revamping school food a signature cause.
For a segment to be aired on his "Food Revolution" TV show, he recently filled a school bus with white sand to represent the amount of sugar Los Angeles Unified school children consume weekly in flavored milk.
"If you have flavored milk, that's candy," he told The Associated Press.
Oliver cheered Deasy's proposal to remove flavored milk from schools during a recent joint appearance on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" show.

Let's see, recesses are being shortened, high activity games are either banned or heavily structured for fear of "lawsuits" cause kids might "get hurt".

It's not what you eat, it's what you do. The more parents abdicate their responsibilities of raising their kids to the Gov't, the more problems we keep having.

Amazingly the answer seems to be "more control"! It's like the world has entered a dark time of stupid.

I absolutely hated the taste of milk as a kid. If plain milk was the only choice I just wouldn't drink anything. I hope they're willing to offer water or watered-down juice or something to the kids.

Who the **** are these people? Who do they think they are? If I had a school aged kid, I'd send him to school everyday with something that was forbidden (candy, cookies, chocolate milk), and I'd encourage him to exploit the system and sell candy and the like. I would pay him or her 100% on the profit made. Then, if the school caused problems I'd take these idiots to court and sue their asses.

I wouldn't exaclty say that. I'd say it's not JUST what you it, it's ALSO what you do. Expend more calories than you tak in, you lose weight. But eat the wrong things, other areas of health can be affected.

If they were to do away with chocloate milk at my sons school, I'd send him in with a little baggie of Nestle's Quick powder and a plastic spoon. It's the only way I can get him to actually drink milk.

Soda Pop is apparently OK in the schools because the vendors pay to place their product there. I'm betting chocolate milk will be OK too once someone pays the schools to keep it there.

As long as the school isn't forcing someone to drink only white milk, I don't see a problem with this.
Chocolate milk has a ton of sugar in it and if we're to have the schools offering lunch, it should be healthy choices.

Not fries and chocolate milk.

The Liberals think everyone else is stupid and incapable of taking care of their own children or themselves for that matter.

Liberals want to control everything you do or keep you doing anything they say is not in the best interest of the State.

We have all been sitting on common sense allowing the wackos to run a muck for the past 60 years.

Today you can't even correct your children's bad behavior with what we know has worked since the beginning of time, or we face jail time.

It's time to rise up and kick the Liberal idiots out of all positions of authority and take our lives back.

Public schools are regulated by the government, and it is perfectly within their power to do this.

Yeah I know!

Its almost like when liberals tell us who we can and cant marry... Oh wait :coffeepap

I think if schools wanna do this, power to em!

Some of your over reactions are just incredible, kids shouldn't be drinking that **** anyway...

You wanna guzzle down soda and chocolate milk at home?

Be my guest. Do so at your own peril.

But i think sometimes, someone has to set the right trend, and besides, i think barring ppop and high sugar products in school would have a positive effect on kids behavior at school, stops them from being hyper then crashing during class.

Yay!

Now they can have even more harmful sugar replacements like sorbitol (which may, or may not be linked to rises in certain kinds of cancers, but it's cool because those companies would certainly NEVER try to hide things like that).

No sorbitol in this product.

Anyway, there are probably dozens of alternatives to removing chocolate milk completely.

Anything government gives can face modifications. It's the American way.

No sorbitol in this product.

"like sorbitol" being the operative phrase.

I'm not aware of all the supplements used, but you can bet its something no human being was meant to consume.

Of course... Why don't we just skip this slide into a nanny state and just have the government take all children and raise them from birth, this way we won't have any bad parents doing atrocious acts like letting their kids have a chocolate milk at lunch.

In London there have been proposals to have parents have their homes hooked into CCTV with government monitoring so if the parents forget to change a diaper that the child protective services can come in and bring the kids into the loving arms of foster parents. (where kids are far more likely to be abused and/ or put on pharmaceuticals like Prozac and all.)

Yeah, so I've heard for the last 10 years...

You're going go have to forgive me for not taking you seriously...

You know with the whole "obamas birth certificate is fake" and "9/11 was an inside job"

Cnspiracy theories seem to be your strong suit.

Cause you know, we're only one school board decision away from CCTV in our homes :coffeepap

Seriously, it's chocolate milk, not like the rest of the sugar substitutes have been banned.
Don't like it, send your kids to a private school or homeschool them.
The public babysitt...school doesn't exist to serve your kids palate.

I really think it's about being "more healthy." Given one generation, we could change the health habits of a nation. I mean, think about it. Why should the school system feed our children anything less than very healthy food? Jamie Oliver, by the way, is a genius with his focus on the eating habits and cafeterias of public schools.

The recommended daily allowance of sugar is 40 grams (on a 2,000-calorie diet)...or 8% of calories...or 10 teaspoons. Americans eat an average of 25 teaspoons of sugar a day -- teens eat an average of 34.

An 8-ounce glass of fat-free chocolate milk has 20 grams of sugar (half the recommended allowance, or 5 teaspoons of sugar. An 8-ounce serving of Coca-Cola, by the way, has 27 grams.

I used to love Burger King's plain chicken sandwich....a piece of breaded chicken, lettuce and a dressing of some sort. Know what the sodium content of that guy is? No? Well, it's 'cause BK would rather you don't know. It has 1390mg of sodium. Recommended daily amount? 2400.

So what's wrong with salt and sugar? They're "bait." We learn to love the taste....and we are more inclined to overeat on a high-sugar or high-salt diet.

If there's anyone out there that's looking to lose weight, and either salt or sugar are your triggers, cut them out as much as possible. Your appestat will change.

So. What's wrong with feeding kids healthy food?? At least in school. We'd be screamin' bloody murder if they were feeding our kids rocks.

In this product, Aspertame is used.

Aspartame has been approved by the FDA for a number of years and is considered safe. It contains two amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid. There is no research to substantiate that it kills brain cells or anything like that.

The public schools don't serve to teach the kids much either... but they sure do like to push the political pet agenda's.

Last I knew soda and chocolate milk were legal, as are cookies and candy.

I think someone should start a community service group to have PI's follow these folks and report what they and their families ingest to the public.

No joke right, of all the things to complain about with schools, this isn't one of them.
Would be nice to see local school boards shift some money away from the wasteful crap towards, more expensive but better meals.

Yea they are legal but since we do have public schools and they have limited funds, it's best to put those funds towards things that are good for people, instead of palate pleasing things like chocolate milk.

It makes no sense to complain about this.
Don't like it? There are other options.

Public schools are regulated by the government, and it is perfectly within their power to do this.

It's perfectly stupid. It's chocolate Milk for crying out loud. My favorite lunch as a kid was PB and Honey sammiches and Chocolate Milk.

You may think it's stupid, but it's not a symptom of the nanny state, as you would like to paint it as.

And I think schools should provide the healthiest lunches possible, instead of milk it should be water, have milk at home.

Why is it Liberals have to make a personal out of everything? Telling the truth is not an over reaction.

There are a couple "people" who say this is not good for you and the schools are right or have the right.

You all make my point. I never said it was good you. I said people can decide what they want their children do and eat etc. and by saying you think this product is bad show that some folks can think and decide for themselves.
