Schools may ban chocolate milk over added sugar

"Chocolate milk has been unfairly pegged as one of the causes of obesity," said Julie Buric, vice president of marketing for the Milk Processors Education Program.
Others note the nation's child obesity epidemic and say flavored milk simply needs to go.
Eight ounces of white milk served in Los Angeles public schools contains 14 grams of natural sugar or lactose; fat-free chocolate milk has an extra six grams of sugar for a total of 20 grams, while fat-free strawberry milk has a total of 27 grams — the same as eight ounces of Coca-Cola.
"Chocolate milk is soda in drag," said Ann Cooper, director of nutrition services for the Boulder Valley School District in Louisville, Colo., which has banned flavored milk. "It works as a treat in homes, but it doesn't belong in schools."
Flavored milk is also a target of British TV chef Jamie Oliver, who has made revamping school food a signature cause.
For a segment to be aired on his "Food Revolution" TV show, he recently filled a school bus with white sand to represent the amount of sugar Los Angeles Unified school children consume weekly in flavored milk.
"If you have flavored milk, that's candy," he told The Associated Press.
Oliver cheered Deasy's proposal to remove flavored milk from schools during a recent joint appearance on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" show.

Let's see, recesses are being shortened, high activity games are either banned or heavily structured for fear of "lawsuits" cause kids might "get hurt".

It's not what you eat, it's what you do. The more parents abdicate their responsibilities of raising their kids to the Gov't, the more problems we keep having.

Amazingly the answer seems to be "more control"! It's like the world has entered a dark time of stupid.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

I absolutely hated the taste of milk as a kid. If plain milk was the only choice I just wouldn't drink anything. I hope they're willing to offer water or watered-down juice or something to the kids.

Who the **** are these people? Who do they think they are? If I had a school aged kid, I'd send him to school everyday with something that was forbidden (candy, cookies, chocolate milk), and I'd encourage him to exploit the system and sell candy and the like. I would pay him or her 100% on the profit made. Then, if the school caused problems I'd take these idiots to court and sue their asses.

I wouldn't exaclty say that. I'd say it's not JUST what you it, it's ALSO what you do. Expend more calories than you tak in, you lose weight. But eat the wrong things, other areas of health can be affected.

If they were to do away with chocloate milk at my sons school, I'd send him in with a little baggie of Nestle's Quick powder and a plastic spoon. It's the only way I can get him to actually drink milk.

Soda Pop is apparently OK in the schools because the vendors pay to place their product there. I'm betting chocolate milk will be OK too once someone pays the schools to keep it there.

As long as the school isn't forcing someone to drink only white milk, I don't see a problem with this.
Chocolate milk has a ton of sugar in it and if we're to have the schools offering lunch, it should be healthy choices.

    Not fries and chocolate milk.

The Liberals think everyone else is stupid and incapable of taking care of their own children or themselves for that matter.

Liberals want to control everything you do or keep you doing anything they say is not in the best interest of the State.

We have all been sitting on common sense allowing the wackos to run a muck for the past 60 years.

Today you can't even correct your children's bad behavior with what we know has worked since the beginning of time, or we face jail time.

It's time to rise up and kick the Liberal idiots out of all positions of authority and take our lives back.

Public schools are regulated by the government, and it is perfectly within their power to do this.

    Yeah I know!

Its almost like when liberals tell us who we can and cant marry... Oh wait

I think if schools wanna do this, power to em!

Some of your over reactions are just incredible, kids shouldn't be drinking that **** anyway...

You wanna guzzle down soda and chocolate milk at home?

Be my guest. Do so at your own peril.

But i think sometimes, someone has to set the right trend, and besides, i think barring ppop and high sugar products in school would have a positive effect on kids behavior at school, stops them from being hyper then crashing during class.
