    Drone Targets Yemeni Cleric

U.S. Tried but Failed to Kill Yemeni Cleric

The U.S. launched a drone strike in Yemen on Thursday aimed at killing Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical cleric suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks in the U.S, but he evaded the missile, Yemeni and U.S. officials said.

The attack came days after a U.S. Navy SEALs team killed Osama bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. Had Thursday's strike succeeded, the U.S. would have killed two of the most-wanted terrorists in a week.
So what do you think is the impetus for the renewed attacks in top AQ operatives?

IIRC haven't we tried to kill him before? Or at least announced that we were going to try and kill him?
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

I think he was on the list but I don't remember much attempt to get him. If I recall correctly, he had hands in a situation in Dallas with some guy who had become radicalized. He was trying to find somebody to help him with a plan suggested by Awlaki and accidentally connected with the FBI, who walked him into a trap.

I also think he had ties to the a**hole who shot up the prep center at Ft. Hood, about 150 miles from here.

He definitely had ties to Major Hasan, The Christmas Day underwear bomber, and also the Times Square bomber.

    IIRC, some headlines were:

"Obama orders assassination of US citizen."

Yeah, and there was all this fuss about the legality of targeting/killing an American citizen by the state.

Tricky...what language is necessary to qualify Awlaki's actions as treason, thereby justifying an attempt on his capture/life.
