Re: Obama Says He Will Not Release Bin Laden Photo

I'm surprised that not releasing it was even on the table.

Releasing it does not constitute parading it around and gloating. It's confirmation for anyone in the world who doesn't trust America, which is a lot of people. I wouldn't be surprised if 30% of the ME are skeptical that he's really dead. Of course some still won't accept it, but most would. Already we have reports of senior AQ members turning themselves in. Releasing the photo would probably result in more of those.

Also, Judicial Watch and the AP have both filed FOIA requests, and there are probably others. In terms of provoking attacks on our troops, I think it'd be better to get it all over with at once instead of having a second threat wave when the inevitable leak happens.

Bin Laden had very little control over AQ world wide. His communications were done face to face with individuals who traveled very carefully to where he was. In very small numbers. Communications back and forth between he and his commanders took days, rather than minutes. He was essentially a figurehead. Dead he becomes a martyr and the #2 guy moves up to #1 and tries to stay hidden.

Americans are no safer after his death, you are just getting some satisfaction.

Again, his body must be shown

Re: Obama Says He Will Not Release Bin Laden Photo

A dead bin Laden photo isn't something I personally would want to see. I think one should have been released, though, because such evidence is routinely expected in many parts of the world that aren't as squeamish as we Americans are. There will always be some who believe we won't release the photo because we're trying to conceal something shameful that was done to him, and if it's leaked it will add fuel to that particular fire. We did it. We should own it. I think Obama made a bad call, but we'll see.

I also brush aside the "respect" aspect of the decision. Bin Laden himself deserved no more respect than any mass murdering terrorist leader. As much as I admire Obama's guts in making the tough decision to go after him and take care of business, I was slightly annoyed that he made such a big deal of how "respectfully" his body was laid to rest. There's such a thing as being too PC, projecting too much weakness in trying to placate an entire religion because one terrorist follower of the religion is killed and flushed overboard like a bloated goldfish, which is what I would have done with his corpse.

I know why Obama did what he did. I get it, I do. That doesn't mean I have to like it. The entire "respectful, dignified burial" routine made bin Laden seem like an equal and honorable foe. He wasn't. He was a damned mass-murdering terrorist, and he deserved no respect whatsoever.

When did Obama say "We'll definitely release it."?

And do we want to be like the terrorists who post photos and videos on the internet...

I think we're better then that. Don't you?

I agree the safety of the troops should come before anyone's desire to see bin Laden's body.

It's the hem hawing that went on, publicly, DUMB. I also highly disagree with the basis being "it will endanger our troops..."

Killing the man did that, pictures won't make a difference, it's silly. Besides, it'll leak out in due time.
This is what you were asked:

When did Obama say they were definitely releasing it? This is the first I've heard from the whitehouse on whether they would release.

This is what you replied with:

    BRIAN WILLIAMS:
There is a report as we have this conversation, for the record, 10:36 a.m., that the President, the White House, has decided and, it may already be out, to release a proof of death photo. What light can you shed on this?
    LEON PANETTA:
The government obviously has been talking about how best to do this, but I don't think there's-- there was any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public. Obviously I've seen those photographs. We've analyzed them and there's no question that it's Bin Laden.
    BRIAN WILLIAMS:
Were you debating how the release of a photo would go over, given its gruesomeness, versus the need on behalf of people all over the world to demand proof of death?
    LEON PANETTA:
I think there's no question that there were concerns and there were questions that had to be debated about just exactly question kind of impact-- would these photos have. But the bottom line is that, you know, we got Bin Laden and I think we have to reveal to the rest of the world the fact that we were able to get him and kill him.

So again, how is Leon Panetta speaking for either Obama or the Obama administration? Matter of fact, what does Panetta have to do with whether Obama said he'll release the pictures or not? Were you oozing so much political anger whenever Bush and his officials said contradicting statements? Or are you simply at that time of the month? You know, the time where you get extra-partisan just for the hell of it?

Photo proof is essential whether you like it or not. The world needs a visual confirmation of OBL's death

    Here's one.

Of course, it's probably been faked, but then, there would be no way to know whether any image was faked or not. A photo in the digital era is proof of nothing.

I think a lot of people want to see photos to get a sense of closure and not everyone who wants to see the pics think he is still alive. just simply human curiosity for some-like myself

From what I read on CNN, it's not just a matter of a corpse with an eye missing. Dude was shot in the forehead above the eye, removing a rather large hunk of his skull. That's really gruesome, so while I don't agree with the decision, I can certainly understand why the Whitehouse would be squeamish about releasing them. If they get leaked, though, it'll only be worse.
