President Obama Approval Rating: Boost From Osama Bin Laden Death Likely

The death of Osama bin Laden is an enormous and immediate political victory for President Obama, who has faced periodic criticism for his handling of the fight against al Qaeda and struggles to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan.
I have seen a couple of polls since this article came out, and it does look like Obama is getting a huge boost in his ratings. But to the Democrats, I say don't take these results to the bank. Bush had a similar jump in ratings, after catching Hussein, yet his poll numbers pancaked to as low as 26% before he left office. The same could very well happen to Obama if he screws up on other issues any more than he has already. 2012 is still a long ways off, and we still have enormous economic problems ahead of us. So yes, let's revel in the moment, then let's get back to work on the serious issues still facing us.

    Article is here.

According to Rasmussen, not so much.

You can't deposit Osama bin Laden's body in a bank account or ask it for a job.

To be far, Bush basically said "f*ck that" to any kind of appeals for bipartisanship or political pandering during his last term, too. I think people went a little crazy with the Bush bashing, but he certainly wasn't kissing any babies or helping any old ladies cross busy intersections.

I agree, though, that this boost probably won't affect the election much.

He SHOULD get a bounce...a significant bounce for this. But this is a long way from Nov 2012. He wont get reelected because he got Osama...he will get reelected if fuel prices are under control, if the economy is in some form of recovery, if unemployment is down. He isnt going to be elected by the republican or democrat voters...he will be reelected by the independents.

Once the dust settles, voters will know what methods turned out to accomplish this amazing feet, and which side supports such methods. Dick Durbin compared Bush's administration to Nazi's and Stalinists for keeping Gitmo open and using enhanced interrogation methods. Liberals far and wide bashed in unison the same.

People aren't stupid, at least in general. And voters have and always will vote with the pocketbooks first and foremost. They despise Obamacare and wasteful spending. And catching bin Laden will be a shared credit between a lot of people, Bush and Obama probably among the least of them.

What methods? We got the name in 2007. Torture stopped in 2006. So, methods other than torture got the intel. Which side supported that?

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.

    From your link:

Daily updates are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. As a result, two-thirds of the interviews for today’s update were conducted before news was released about the death of Osama bin Laden.

    9 points so far -- that's unprecedented.

So many of us are waiting for him to step up to the plate and lead.
