Americans Blame Wasteful Government Spending for Deficit

Well, isn't this interesting. All you ultra-liberals out there that want to raise taxes and hurt the economic recovery, take careful note. This should help make the debt ceiling debate vigorous.

If only those Americans would take their own advice and stop spending so much at home...

I think we can all agree deficits and debt is bad

101

How to tackle those things is divided

Everyone wants to look like the hero

Sure maybe people think we spend too much on social programs

BUt guess what, polls also show they don't want the government to cut them (too much?)

LOL!

Oh well. I'm sure things will work themselves out

(one way or another)

Take heart.

Someone forgot to take their meds today.

By wasteful spending I assume they mean actual waste and fraud and not social spending which I would view as a waste. If that is the case, then Americans are stupid. It is military and social spending that is racking up the debt.

Chalk it up to the failed bail out programs and every program Obama's administration has come up with. Had the money been given to Americans and not big business we would have saved millions of house from foreclosure and millions of good people would be out from under their bills ans they would have started spending some of the 10s of thousands each family would have received.

Obama has done one thing right in two years and for that I say finally, and Osama is dead. Other than that he has been a failure. So I will go easy on him until his next foul up. That should come tomorrow.

You sound like Cinderella's stepmother.

To be fair, nothing he does could ever please you. Just confess and move on, kwim?

I don't know of anyone who has said the government shouldn't cut spending.

Also, that poll reflects blame for what caused the deficit, not what Americans believe should be done to fix it.

Where did conservatives get the idea that liberals don't think spending should be cut at all?

Straw man, anyone?

And since when did solving this issue become one or the other?

Yeah, right, on both accounts.

There are plenty of people who say we shouldn't worry about spending, we need to let the Bush tax cuts expire on the wealthy.

So over spending caused the deficit, but we should raise taxes to pay for it? Dood, get a life and then get back to me.

I don't think anybody said that, no.

Sure people have. Those who aren't as rigid as all that say that taxes should be raised and defense spending cut. That's just great, raise taxes to hurt the recovery and cut the discretionary budget item that doesn't grow year to year and ignore all the other mandatory spending programs whose growth threatens budgets for coming decades. What a ****ing joke.

And lets not forget they **** bricks when you talk of a low number such as 60 billion. OH NO! NOT SIXTY BILLION!

Spending cuts would hamper the recovery. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that line.

As much as I hate the idea of raising taxes, it does become a necessity at a certain point. You can only cut government spending so much before that hurts the economy. That is the thing that people like you are clearly too uneducated on economics to understand. The government is one of the biggest employers and spenders in the country. The welfare of the economy is dependent upon government spending. You can cut government spending to the degree that it would drastically hurt the economy. There has to be a balance, and that means at a certain point taxes do have to be raised.

In the long term, it would be wise for the American people to think of reducing the size of the government. But at its current size, it would be financial suicide to make drastic cuts without considering the consequences.

obama's 2012 budget published in february, the only itemized accounting submitted by the party in power in 700 days, raises spending to 3.73T and actually increases borrowing 20% to 1.65T

U.S. President Barack Obama is sending Congress a $3.73 trillion US spending blueprint that pledges $1.1 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade through spending cuts and tax increases.

Who said people don't understand it? People understand it very well, but they feel it has to happen sooner or later.

I hate to have to quote myself, but I have addressed this point before.

Do you consider what the effect of making sudden changes to government spending and taxation would have on the economy?

For example, a lot of people would like to switch from an income tax to a consumption tax like the Fair tax. That is all well and good, but don't you think making a sudden change from one to the other would have a rather negative impact on our economy? We are after all a consumer economy, and a consumption tax emphasizes saving not spending.

Or how about making drastic cuts in government spending? Would it not be better to make phased cuts over a period of time rather than drastic cuts which will increase the jobless rate and shut down services that will increase our long term health and legal costs?

I think a lot of people are so caught up in cutting spending and changing the tax code that they aren't thinking how sudden changes will affect our economy, particularly since it takes time for people to change. In fact, I think the greatest danger to our economy isn't so much what we do, but how fast we try to do it. I'm also not particularly trusting of politicians who are trying to score political points with their base constituents to make wise choices in implementing small and incremental changes as opposed to sudden and potentially disastrous changes.

Phase cuts are unrealistic and not going to happen in this world. You either cut it big now, or you do nothing of importance. Sorry, I'm not saying I don't agree with you, but its not going to happen in such a way.

And quoting yourself is easier than saying stuff over and over again. I'm in total support of it!

Calling the budget one of "tough choices and sacrifices," Obama said most of the largest cuts would be held off until after the end of his first term.

you think that Americans believe A) that we spend "too much" and that B) we should raise taxes so that we can keep spending "too much"?

hahaha I love how they put "national adults." Idk why but that's funny to me. It's like "this category includes everyone except national children."

Democrats DO need to get their act together and realize that spending is the main driver of the deficit, but I believe any comprehensive and honest plan to reduce the deficit must include tax increases.

There's plenty of waste in the government - that is to say, government spending that doesn't actually accomplish what it's supposed to be doing.

Most of it's in defense, as medicare and SS have fairly strong anti-waste programs already.

Medicare and SS are also not (yet) contributing to our massive national debt, so that largest source of spending, which is presently almost completely paid for by payroll taxes and is cutting into pretty much the only surplus the US government has ever meaningfully sustained, is in fact not the cause of our debt.

The fact is that decades ago, before taxes for the wealthy were cut massively and defense spending was also raised massively, our government could pay for itself just fine. The variables that have changed massively since are taxation on the wealthy and defense spending, and there's no reason to believe we can't fix the problem by fixing those two points.

Now, in order to avoid a later catastrophe in Medicare/SS that is not due to lower birth rates but is in fact due to an old and ongoing miscalculation between individual money in and money out, we should also increase the payroll tax. If I recall correctly, increasing the SS payroll cap should fix the program's problems. I'm not sure what increase Medicare would require, though.
