U.N. Prepares to Debate Whether 'Mother Earth' Deserves Human Rights Status

U.N. Prepares to Debate Whether 'Mother Earth' Deserves Human Rights Status

A bloc of mostly socialist governments lead by Bolivia have put the issue on the General Assembly agenda to discuss the creation of a U.N. treaty that would grant the same rights found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to Mother Nature.
“If legal systems recognized the rights of other-than-human beings,” he says, such as mountains, rivers, forests and animals, “courts and tribunals could deal with the fundamental issues of environmental contamination.”
Really makes you feel good about all the money the US gives to the UN doesn't it. Mountains, snakes and mosquitoes with human rights protected by UN courts and tribunals; finally those evil capitalists will be forced to pay for thier crimes.

The symbolism is out there but from an ivory tower standpoint you could find similarly perverse expressions in any cultural discourse.

Gee, socialist Bolivia trying to use Green issues to lay down world govt controlling regulations. Shocking.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

While I can understand where they are coming from, I don't think that this is needed at all. (See below)

Edit: What I think we need to realize as a species is that the Earth is not something we can just use and abuse. For quite a while we have been pimping the Earth and it is coming back to bite us in the ass in the form of climate change. The Earth is a precious and beautiful thing and that we just can't use it to make profit. We need to change the way we treat the planet, from something that can make us profit to our home.

You see what I meant when I said you can find similarly perverse expressions in any cultural discourse.

Thing is, in socialist countries where rapid industrialization has lead to greater fall out on the vitality of the country, this sort of rhetoric makes sense. Similarly, in a country that believes a robust business is the foremost specimen of human achievement, corporations seem entitled to personhood.
