Paper: Documents show US funding Syrian opposition

The State Department has been secretly financing opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad, The Washington Post reported, citing previously undisclosed diplomatic documents provided to the newspaper by the WikiLeaks website.

One of the outfits funded by the U.S. is Barada TV, a London-based satellite channel that broadcasts anti-government news into Syria, the Post reported Sunday. Barada's chief editor, Malik al-Abdeh, is a cofounder of the Syrian exile group Movement for Justice and Development.

The leaked documents show that the U.S. has provided at least $6 million to Barada TV and other opposition groups inside Syria, the newspaper said.

Doesn't say how long this has been going on, but good for all the people who've made this happen, most likely including to some extent Bush and Obama.

I wonder if we printed this money or borrowed it from China. Who are these opponents? Would they be any better than Bashar Assad? And why are we getting involved at all? No wonder the entire middle east hates the US....

I agree with Helvidius. Unless we know exactly who we're funding and they're clearly better than Assad (which is not the case in Syria), it's best to just stay out of it. I think we can be cordial to the opposition figures without actively funding them. Similarly, we can be cordial to Assad without supporting him; contrary to popular belief, he's not an irredeemable anti-American extremist.

The Middle East Hates the West because they are taught from Childhood that we all infidels and they deal with us for profit and they say the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The Koran allows dealing with infidels if it's in the Muslim's best interest.

As to who started paying for this rebellion It doesn't matter as much as how the hell we get out and stay out.

If we had a better logical energy policy we would not need one damn thing from that part of the world. I think we have enough Camels and grow more Dates in California than they do in the whole stinking area.

Agreed. I have a better and more logical energy policy though: We should take enough oil from Iraq, Kuwait and Libya to pay for our military expenses.

Is that a funny or an /s/?

Why, do you think it is wrong to expect someone to help the USA pay for some of the costs incurred? Commies like you love to support such actions when other nations try to get thier money back yet history has always given the victor the spoils of war. The USA brings a new level of ethics to the world yet people like you hate on it and wish for its demise.

So we should violate those ethics to pay for expansionist wars we don't know why we're fighting.

Gotcha.
