Obama: Congress must — and will — raise debt limit

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama confidently predicted Friday that a divided Congress would raise the nation's borrowing limit to cover the staggering federal debt rather than risk triggering a worldwide recession, but he conceded for the first time he would have to offer more spending cuts to Republicans to get a deal.

Pushed to the brink, Obama said, the two parties would find "a smart compromise."

This is almost comical considering his vote against raising the debt limit in 2006.

What has changed since then? If the debt limit hadn’t been raised in 2006 would the ramifications be any different than today? Why didn’t we hear the gloom and doom predictions of a global economic meltdown in 2006 that we hear today?

In 2006 there wasn't a single democrat who voted for raising the debt limit, unless you count Arlen Spector as a democrat. GovTrack: Senate Vote On Passage: H. J. Res. 47 [109th]: Debt Limit Increase resolution Today they are all preaching to us about how irresponsible it would be to vote against a debt limit increase.

I don’t get it. Can one of you democrats fill me in on the logic here?

Add me to the list of those who would like further explanation....but beware, someone will get cocky and mention that several Republicans (including Boehner and Candor) voted for these increases.

I doubt that. The House, under Speaker Pelosi, held a special ballot that didn't record the votes of Conressional reprentatives.

The logic is that they want a naked bill that does nothing but allow them to continue wasting taxpayer dollars with no strings attached.

That's all. They're afraid that yet again riders will be attached to a bill that Obama must sign that would limit the money they can steal from your grandchildren.

You mean they don't want irrelevant social ideologies forced into a budget debate? I'm ok with that.

I'm not a Democrat, but I can fill in the blanks because it's kinda obvious.

The Democrats knew the debt ceiling increase was going to pass without their help, so they voted against it so that they could claim to be more fiscally responsible than the Republicans and make a talking point out of it.

Both parties use debt ceiling increases and budget crises to play chicken with their opposition whenever possible.

I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

The democrats show what hypocrites they are when Obama,Reid and others are embarrassed by their 2006 vote against raising the debt limit. This shows the democrats are just partisan hacks and do not want to work with the GOP

If you are demanding that our elected politicians followed a strict principle of consistency - there would not be a single member of Congress with more than a few years experience.

The partisan hackery extends to your precious GOP as well as Democrats and those who pretend otherwise are themselves guilty.

Why talk about the GOP it is the dems showing their hypocrisy to try and prevent cuts included in the bill. I am independent conservative and I am mad at the useless cuts I seen the GOP present last week

So you admit that your accusation of partisan hackery applies to both sides of the aisle?
