Obama: I'll cut $4 trillion

that's part of the problem, friend

too many great speeches

what is it about the recommendations of the cited deficit commission proposal that you disagree with?

I have no use for this "So called president" who is STILL nothing but a "Community Organizer'.

I said that the only thing I liked about Obama's speech was his intent to raise taxes on the richest 2% of Americans.

yes, he's GOOD at that

it's his TRUE HEART

so much of the rest is legerdemain

except for his mantra of INVESTMENT, which means MORE spending, in his now famous fourfold platform---education, student loans, the color green (NOT the color of money) and of course infrastructure

know the man

would that be the commission Obama himself appointed? the one he has ignored until now? until it looked like the GOP had the upper hand in budget talks? that one?

nyt, december, 09: service on the debt, MERE INTEREST ALONE, will approach a full ONE TRILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR by about 2017, 2018

News Headlines

president slash, hurry!

Without parsing the entire speech, I would venture that before this is over much of what he said will have turned out to have been a lie. But if you want one easy one right off the bat, lie may be a harsh term, but mislead certainly comes to mind when ever he tries to lay off the current state of the economy entirely on the Bush administration alone.

j-mac

It isn't misleading if he truly believes it.

But after Democrats and Republicans committed to fiscal discipline during the 1990s, we lost our way in the decade that followed. We increased spending dramatically for two wars and an expensive prescription drug program - but we didn't pay for any of this new spending. Instead, we made the problem worse with trillions of dollars in unpaid-for tax cuts - tax cuts that went to every millionaire and billionaire in the country; tax cuts that will force us to borrow an average of $500 billion every year over the next decade.

To give you an idea of how much damage this caused to our national checkbook, consider this: in the last decade, if we had simply found a way to pay for the tax cuts and the prescription drug benefit, our deficit would currently be at low historical levels in the coming years.

Of course, that's not what happened. And so, by the time I took office, we once again found ourselves deeply in debt and unprepared for a Baby Boom retirement that is now starting to take place. When I took office, our projected deficit was more than $1 trillion. On top of that, we faced a terrible financial crisis and a recession that, like most recessions, led us to temporarily borrow even more. In this case, we took a series of emergency steps that saved millions of jobs, kept credit flowing, and provided working families extra money in their pockets. It was the right thing to do, but these steps were expensive, and added to our deficits in the short term.

So that's how our fiscal challenge was created. This is how we got here. And now that our economic recovery is gaining strength, Democrats and Republicans must come together and restore the fiscal responsibility that served us so well in the 1990s.
Source.
The above section of the speech is the truth, from a Democratic POV. Obama is not misleading, but believes that the last decade was the main cause of the deficit, and he took responsibility for his part in it as well.

Now, without saying he lied or mislead, we can certainly say he was wrong after a few years has gone by after his proposal passes. If it does at all.

Prof, ryan is on the teaparty bandwagon. The teaparty 30-45 rich guys need to keep something in mind...there are numerous middleclass republicans just like me who make less than 150k.
I fully understand the country is in debt. I fully understand something has to be done. I also know when the economy kicks back in tons more tax revenue will be collected federal and in states.
The teaparty should be attacking illegal immigration that costs us untold billions, not a mention. Why arent they harping on a moratorium on ALL FOREIGN AID until our own house finances are right. Why arent they looking at the billions in subsidies to big corporations...everyone with a brain the size of a pea knows big oil shouldnt be getting a nickle in subsidies theyve been getting them for decades and we the people have gotten zero benefit except to watch their profits soar and their CEO get a 400 million retirement package...Im not talking class warfare here im talking the TRUTH. Im sick and tired of hearing the sameOle conservative and liberal talking points...both of them are broken BS records...Tax cuts for the rich creates jobs, The rich pay to much, Corporations need no regulations blah blah blah...and the left with all their garbage. Somewhere in the middle is the truth and thats where we have to get to be successful again and prosper.
There should be NO MORE tax cuts for the Richest Americans until we are out of debt. Social Security and Medicare should be part of a package of cuts along with stopping illegal immigration and GIMMES for illegal immigrants as well as the end of outrageous giving countries our money that we BORROWED and subsidies to big corps to enhance CEO pay and BONUS..
Lets all stop the bull**** please and be realistic and get the job done. We could do this with very little pain to any americans if we cut where ryans plan doesnt even GO. Thats my story and im stickin to it ::)

Noticed that you ignored my post on who pays the taxes and at what rate. that is the federal tax burden so add the state tax burden to that and how much more is right to get from the rich? You can ignore the facts but that doesn't change them.

Obama is not serious about cutting the deficit, he wants to tax the rich so he can still spend more. He has no clue about economics. I hope that he really taxes the rich so that they can ALL move to another country and take their businesses with them. This man has no business being president, he is so deep that he needs scuba gear to get out of this mess. That's what we get we we elect inept people. I was very surprised that he didn't blamed Bush in his speech this time.

You are lucky that he ignored your post. This person is rude as hell.

It isn't misleading if he truly believes it.

if he truly believed anything he'd've passed a budget for 2011

his senate would have moved on hr1, either up, down or sideways

his 2012 bid wouldn't like the way it does, IN WRITING

until harry reid puts up something IN NUMBERS, president barack the slash hussein is ALL POSER

right there in front of everyone

go ahead, tax the rich, fight that war

americans want SOLUTIONS

TALK aint it

He's making a political move. He wants to own the budget reduction debate.

He's a lying POS as usual. same marxist bs about taxing the rich more and more spending. he is too dishonest to admit that until pandering to the many with promises of goodies that only the rich will pay for is ended, the deficit will continue to increase because the politicians buy votes by promising the majority goodies that the rich have to fund

Desperately trying to keep the tax cuts for their wealthy donors.

there are three possible motivations for this nonsense

1) you believe that from each according to their abilities is a valid premise and wins elections for your dem masters

2) you labor under the delusion that the rich aren't paying far more than their share of the income and most others are paying far less than their share of the income

3) you are envious of the rich

The most cuts are not necessarily whats best for the country overall...cuts have to be thoughtful and care given to the consequences...anyone go in say ok I want to cut 6 trillion...lets cut this and this and this and this

What ryan has against his plan is...he want to increase COSTS for all middle class americans and then he wants to give the rich a full additional 25% cut in income taxs...if all you conservatives think once that becomes clear to most americans thats going to float I think your in for a surprise.
If your going to make a cut as drastic as 6trillion...you damn sure better make sure EVERYONE shares the pain and not the richest gain while everyone else takes it from behind.

a question for the populist whiners here

what is more likely to prevent the deficit from increasing

taxing the rich more while allowing the vast majority of voters to suffer no more tax increases no matter how much the government spends

or making everyone pay more taxes whenever the government spends more

the reason why we have massive overspending is that politicians win elections by promising people stuff that those people dont have to pay for

how does obama's plan reign in that problem?

governor cuomo's SOLUTION

The State of the State begins with an honest analysis of the crisis that we face. In government, as in life, you can never solve a problem if you refuse to acknowledge it. The economic recession has taken an especially hard hit on the State of New York. In 2009, we had a twenty-six year high in unemployment, roughly 800,000 New Yorkers are now unemployed, hundreds of thousands more are under-employed. We have the worst business tax climate in the nation, period. Our taxes are 66% higher than the national average. Upstate is truly an economic crisis. In real GDP, from 2001-2006, upstate New York grew about 1.7% per year while the average in the nation was 2.7%. The costs of pensions are exploding, 1.3 billion in 1998-1999, projected for 2013, 6.2 billion - a 476% increase and its only getting worse.

The State of New York spends too much money, it is that blunt and it is that simple. Our spending has far exceeded the rate of inflation. From 1994-2009, inflation was about 2.7% per year; medicaid when up over 5% per year and education went up over 6% per year. We just can’t afford those rates of increase. State spending actually outpaced income growth. State spending increased just under 6%, personal income growth was only 3.8%.

And most damaging, our expenses in this state far exceed revenue. We’ve been focusing on this year and the deficit this year, which is a very large deficit about $10 billion, and that is a problem and it is a major problem; what’s worse is it’s not just about this year. Next year, the problem goes to $14 billion. The year after, the deficit goes to $17 billion. This is not a one year problem my friends. This is a fundamental economic realignment for the State of New York. You look at the chart, you look at the arrows and this is an unsustainable rate of growth and it has been for a long time.

Not only do we spend too much, but we get too little in return. We spend more money on education than any state in the nation and we are number 34 in terms of results. We spend more money on Medicaid than any other state in the nation and we are number 21 in results. We spend about $1.6 billion per year in economic development and we are number 50 in terms of results.

And the large government we have is all too often responsive to the special interests, over the people of the State of New York. The proof is in the pudding. And New Yorkers are voting with their feet. Two million New Yorkers have left the State over the past decade. What does this say? It says we need radical reform, it says we need a new approach, we need a new perspective and we need it now. This is a fundamental realignment for the state. We are going to redesign our approach because the old way wasn’t working anyway, let's be honest.

We are going to start by transforming New York’s economy. Because what made New York the Empire State was a not a large government complex, it was a vibrant private sector that was creating great jobs in the State of New York. That’s what made us the Empire State once and that’s what’s going to make us the Empire State again. And we have to relearn the lesson our founders knew and we have to put up a sign that says New York is open for business. We get it. And this is going to be a business friendly State.

Next, we are going to have to confront the tax situation in our State. The property taxes in New York are killing New Yorkers. Thirteen of the sixteen highest tax counties are in New York when assessed by home value. In absolute dollars, Westchester County has the highest property taxes in the United States of America. Nassau County has the second highest property taxes in the United State of America. It has to end, it has to end this year. We have to hold the line on taxes for now and reduce taxes in the future. New York has no future as the tax capital of the nation. Our young people will not stay. Our business will not come. This has to change.

Put it simply the people of this state simply cannot afford to pay any more taxes, period.

We need to transform our budget. We have to start with an emergency financial plan to stabilize our finances we need to hold the line and we need to institute a wage freeze in the State of New York. We need to hold the line on taxes, we need a state spending cap and we need to close this $10 billion gap without any borrowing.

GOVERNOR ANDREW M. CUOMO STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS | Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

the gub would suggest the slasher doesn't "get it"

leadership, anyone?

Then perhaps you'd better lobby your Republican Congressmen and Senators to raise more taxes on the middle class. I'd really like to know how they'd respond to that.

sadly that would lose elections but it is the only thing that in the long run will stop the cancer killing america

that cancer being politicians spending to buy votes of people who don't have to pay for the spending
