"It's not that I'm afraid to die, I just don't want to be there when it happens." Woody Allen.
Obama is setting up the GOP in a nice tidy box... Now the GOP will need a misinformation campaign so tall it could fall over.
Elections are won and lost not on who's actually the most fit to lead or anything like that...
The GOP needs to be very, very careful because Obama is gonna play the populist card and if it works, the GOP are going to look like the riches pet, raising taxes on the rich is relatively popular amog independents (folks that wins elections)
Be careful repubs, Obama is not as stupid as you think.
but when we look back at 2000 when the shrub arrived on the scene, the government was throwing off a surplus
and dicknbush decided it was time to place the government into a deeper accumulated national deficit instead by reducing the tax burden primarily on the wealthy
that is much of what put us in today's fiscal conundrum
which is why we should now undo such stupidity
taxes are the lowest they have been in over a half century
do not mistake this to presume that spending should not be shaved. just as the deficit commission has presented, the solution involves increasing revenues while also decreasing expenditures
Obama, to his credit, echoed that when noting that republicans will express opposition to collecting more taxes while democrats will object to trimming government spending - especially for safety net programs
the reality is, the proposal of the deficit commission should be adopted
please again note that no one has come close to suggesting that the government appropriate the total wealth of every billionaire. stuff that straw man
While there was no surplus there is also no SSI Trust fund.
What most people on this site do not understand is that the debt they selfishly pile up is essentially an IOU for our kids. They will have to pay either through inflation or higher taxes. So it is really my son I am concerned about. Through his achievements he has been able to go to a great prep school and now now one of the best undergraduate business schools in the country.
I have mentioned to him that just as people of my generation moved to different states to advance their careers, that he should be comfortable to not limit his universe of where to ply his skills. Perhaps it will be in the U.S. perhaps U.K. or Hong Kong.
The U.S. for many years suceeded in part because we were able to attract the best talent in the world to live and work here. If the U.S. stays on the trajectory the opposite will happen over the next few decades. If the Obama philosophy wins the day ( it might with the percent of voters who are underachievers) then why should someone with the skills of someone like my son want to live under the yoke of having to pay for a bunch of hangers on.
