Chicago school bans some lunches brought from home

Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

"Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?" the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: "We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!"

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: "Do you see the situation?"

At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago's West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

Really, school lunches? they know better than you or I what we should feed our children? I think this is far out of bounds.

Wait. In what universe is the school lunch "better quality food" than, say, whatever is leftover in the drain of my sink? Because that's about what I remember from school.

I don't like this, while I favor only offering healthy choices at school, banning lunches from home is going a bit too far.

It really depends on the school, my school lunches were generally good, and my mom(who is a lunch lady) has brought home food from her school which was awesome.

School food is fine, and my son eats at school regularly, but the school should not be allowed to force him to eat it.

It would be a bit of a stretch, imho, to show that lunch from home is somehow disruptive to the learning environment.

I doubt this would stand if challenged.
    I may be wrong.

Sometimes after eating Chipotle I become rather disruptive to my environment...

Gov't knows best children. i mean now that gov't is going to be paying for our healthcare they need to make sure we are eating right to keep cost down.
Climate, changes. It takes a particularly uneducated population to buy into the idea that it's their fault climate is changing and further political solutions can fix it.

Now one school principal is representative of "government" as a whole?

That means I get to pick any one person to represent an opposing view, right?
