WASHINGTON – A last minute budget deal, forged amid bluster and tough bargaining, averted an embarrassing federal shutdown and cut billions in spending — the first major test of the divided government voters ushered in five months ago.

Democrats didn't get everything they wanted. Neither did Republicans. But the government is not going to shut down. People on both sides can bitch about this all they want to, but it was a good compromise. In the end, Boehner did the right thing by removing the Planned Parenthood rider, and Obama agreed to more cuts than he wanted. Win-win.

If you think this was fun, just wait until next time. It just might be hilarious. LOL.

I can get behind that budget. It's nice to see that Boehner stopped trying to get the Senate to pass something by attaching it to a crucial piece of legislation.

Yeah, I made a couple of calls. Glad it worked out.

What's foolish is to fund something that has major contributor, and believe me, Planned Parenthood does.

OP makes a good point; this was nothing compared to the debt-ceiling getting raised and the 2012 budget battles to come.

"stand-BY!"

1. what the american people see---while one side is working its bright orange butt off trying to cut spending, the other is resorting to hate speech (trying to kill women, like bombing innocent civilians, the equivalent of the civil war) to protect one of its sacred porky pigs

2. what the american people see---in times like these, any govt employee deemed non essential shouldn't be shutdown for a day or a week but must instead be eliminated permanently

3. how can any party in power contemplate for an instant the consideration of our soldiers as non essential, especially at a time when we have been committed to the waging of three wars overseas

4. that said, congratulations to president obama on this past-midnite resolution of the budget it was his responsibility to do a year ago, his victory lap address at 11:30 last nite was resonant, congrats on this "biggest annual spending cut in history," and your testimonial to yourself about overseeing the new years eve extension of the bush tax cuts for all americans including the rich was your coup de grace

5. so forward we go---what will be your position, mr president, when the upcoming fights over the debt ceiling and the 2012 budget approach their midnites

6. you know where the bright orange dude and his nerdy budget chair will be, they're constant

7. it's the sign of the times, keynes is kaput, draconian cuts are chichi, from albany to sacto there's no stopping em

8. the president's 2012 budget proposal published in february is, therefore, precisely the wrong recipe for the age

9. the guarantee of an up-or-down floor vote in the senate on hr2, repeal of obamacare, conceded by mr reid as part of the outline agreed upon for october, just might cost a senator like claire mccaskill her job, what's a man like joe manchin, for example gonna do who campaigned in west virginia against obamacare, a stiffneck like nebraska's ben nelson is practically gonna have to vote to kill it or change parties or resign

10. and the stand-alone vote on planned parenthood, a very seamy organization, also promised by reid, aint gonna be pretty---what will americans see when senator schumer swears never, never, never will he cut the quarter billion per while mom and pop are boiling up another bag of top ramen for tommy and tess for the twentieth nite in a row

it was a good nite

americans are finally seeing at least a little leadership out of washington

I'm just glad the metro is still going to be running. 800,000 people in DC get seriously screwed if the government shuts down. And all those "non-essential" things, like garbagemen, libraries, the University of DC, transportation, the DMV... Yeah, none of these things really need to be operating. Absolutely, we all get by just fine.

/sarcasm

The only reason we need the DMV is because of the laws placed on us by the gov't. If we wouldn't need stupid license plates or other registration bullshyt, we would have no need for the DMV. The are simply a source of revenue for the gov't. So yea, shut their asses down.

Yep..here we are on the Titanic and heading for the big ass Iceberg, and by voting last election all we did was move around the deck chairs.

Democrats didn't get everything they wanted. Neither did Republicans.

That sounds like good government defined. I hope we see more of it, but considering there's a Presidential election next year I'm not optimistic.

The sad thing is, some here will buy whatever their side is selling. Be prepared for "It's all Democrat's fault" or "Republicans are trying to destroy everything we believe in." Idiots.

I am still in awe how the Democrats didn't cave. I mean it seems like for the past four years they have caved on everything.

If you call it a win-win when Congress cuts $38 billion in spending against a $14 trillion deficit, you are delusional.

This country is sinking and sinking fast and no one gives a sh!t as long as they get their free stuff. Wait until the U.S. Dollar because worthless because it is taken off the world's standard currency, then we will feel the pain overnight. After this we can listen to our hack politicians saying would've. should've and could've along with finger pointing.

The democrats lost again and they lost because they resort to their absurd horror threats. They want to kill women blahblah.
Cutting Planned Parenthood was the absolute right thing to do, it serves no govt purpose than to empty our pockets.

Obama taking credit for spending cuts is laughable.
Next year is when the big battle comes and I will be just as against Income tax cuts for the richest americans and corporations at the expense of the middle class as I am now...

I am against supporting the leviathan we have now for our government, and it's because of this is why the middle class is pitted against all other classes...we are alone in this fight. A flat and fair tax is the answer along with putting the beast back on the box where it belongs.

you have to start somewhere.

The rider to stop the EPA from regulating CO2 emissions would have violated a 2007 supreme court decision.

All the Tea Party newbies might want to take a civics class...

The EPA was formed by Nixon's executive order making it illegal for this organization to make any law, now what about civics.

The didn't make the law. They just enforce it.

It's called the Clean Air Act. They don't teach that on Fox News.

National Debt Increased by 75% under Bush:
2001 - $5.871 trillion
2008 - $10.640 trillion

National Debt Increased 25% Under Obama:
Jan 31st 2009 = $10.569-Trillion
Jan 31st 2011 = $14.131-Trillion

But of the $3.56-trillion increase, 98% was carry over from Bush programs:
Bush: $910-billion = Interest on Debt 2009/2011
Bush: $360-billion = Iraq War Spending 2009/2011
Bush: $319-billion = TARP bailout Balance from 2008 (as of May 2010)
Bush: $419-billion = Bush Recession Caused Drop in taxes
Bush: $190-billion = Bush Medicare Drug Program 2009/2011
Bush: $211-billion = Bush Meicare Part-D 2009/2011
Bush: $771-billion = Bush Tax Cuts 2009/2011

Bush's contributions:
2001 to 2008: $4.769-trillion
2009 to 2010: $3.181-trillion
Total: $7.950-trillion
Increase Since 2001 = $14.131 - $5.871 = $8.26-Trillion
Bush's contribution: $7.950-trillion / $8.26-Trillion = 96%

Obama only contribution: $580-billion = Stimulus Spending (as of Dec 2010).
Increase caused By Bush's Programs: 96%
Increase caused by Obama's Programs: 4%

And lets not forget that Bush inherited a massive surplus from Clinton, whereas Obama inherited Bush's economic crater. It's been decades since Conservatives have been fiscally conservative, now they're just social conservatives. Harper is just a bad as Bush.

We are not talking about FOX news or are we? This quote below directly from the EPA's website...unconstitutional. Congress shall make no law..
EPA is called a regulatory agency because Congress authorizes us to write regulations that explain the critical details necessary to implement environmental laws. In addition, a number of Presidential Executive Orders (EOs) play a central role in our activities.

I am against supporting the leviathan we have now for our government, and it's because of this is why the middle class is pitted against all other classes...we are alone in this fight. A flat and fair tax is the answer along with putting the beast back on the box where it belongs.

A flat fair tax raises taxs on the poor and middle class and dramtically lowers it for the richest americans...theres nothing fair about it
