While my response was slightly tongue-in-cheek, make no mistake, self defense is NOT child-abuse.

Heres the thing...when you look at this case through the eyes of an attentive father or mother its hard to reconcile the level of force used. The flip side to that of course is that in MOST cases with children like this, application of a little attentive parenting throughout the childs life would mean this would never happen. In MOST cases (with the rare exceptions of those that are truly biochemically imbalanced) these children have learned that there ARE no rules and guidelines...boundaries that are then enforced. Most of these kids are bitter, angry, pissed at the world. Counseling and therapy isnt as effective at this age as simple behavior modification. That requires an effective and willing parent...preferably parents.

Out of control, poorly parented kids aren't anything new. 30 years ago, when I was in grade school, teachers didn't need cops, tasers, nor pepper spray to keep kids in line.

I don't see this just as a case of crappy parenting. I also see this as a case of crappy teaching.

An 8 year old with a weapon can be as deadly as an 18 year old. To think otherwise is naÔve. If Iím being attacked Iím not going to bother to card someone to determine my appropriate response.

The teacher got all the other children to safety and prevented the hooligan from injuring anyone. I call that a good job. In case you havenít noticed, teachers today canít discipline children like they used to, and thatís not by their choice. However, the teacher did everything she could considering the circumstances and I still say the kid deserved a face full of OC. Itís not a teacherís responsibility to teach a child appropriate behavior, thatís called parenting.

I have yet to see anyone who is saying that the cops' response was a bad one give an alternative that was likely to work and cause potentially less damage to the child. Anyone have a realistic suggestion?

I think the cops did the right thing here and the mother needs to accept it and do a better job at parenting her son instead of parading him around like a victim.

It would take a sorry excuse of a person, to feel threatened by and 8 y/o, with a knife.

The teacher should have been more involved with defusing the situation, rather than doing nothing and allowing it to grow totally out of control.

    And, there's what's wrong...right there.
