BEIJING – One of China's most famous contemporary artists has been missing for more than a day after he was blocked from leaving the country and police raided his home, his wife said Monday.

The disappearance of artist Ai Weiwei comes as China carries out a massive crackdown on lawyers, writers and activists, arresting and detaining dozens since online calls for protests similar to those in the Middle East and North Africa began to circulate in February. No public protests have emerged.

Known for his distinctive scraggly beard and stocky frame, Ai was a consultant for the futuristic Bird's Nest stadium at the Beijing Olympics before souring on the event. He was later beaten and detained while attempting to attend the trial of an advocate for victims of the devastating 2008 earthquake in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

I have seen Ai speak on many occasions on TV. I have never seen him advocate violent overthrow of the Chinese government, though has been critical of its excesses. This is yet another example of the brutal government in Beijing simply not being able to handle criticism of the way it handles things at home.

Sorry to tell you, but the facts tend to not have any meaning when you are dealing with Communists, Totalitarian governments, or Obama or Liberals.

They work from the position that if you tell a lies often enough it will eventually become reality.

Oh wait a minute that was Hitler. No matter they all still operate under that theory.

Oh but republicans and FOX news is pure as driven snow. LOL Remember that republicans have a over exaggerated view of themselves and tend to have short memories. They forget their own faults quickly.

I just came back from China and am going again in about two weeks. I'll keep an eye out for him. I hope China gets past this sort of fear.

I didn't start that. Some republican did. It has nothing to do with Beijing. But that doesn't stop the right
What does this have to do with thugs in Beijing???

BEIJING – Chinese police called more people in for questioning Tuesday as they expanded their investigation into avant-garde artist Ai Weiwei, who has not been heard from since being taken into custody over the weekend, friends said.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner called Monday for Ai's immediate release, saying Washington was "deeply concerned by the trend of forced disappearances, extralegal detentions, arrests and convictions of human rights activists for exercising their internationally recognized human right for freedom of expression."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday he was very concerned about Ai's disappearance and said London was committed to engaging China on human rights issues.

Rather than make diplomatic protestations, we need to actually show the Chinese we mean business. If China will not stop behavior like this, we should move out business out of China to other countries who have better records on human rights than China does.
