Source: Ind. Senate approves marriage amendment - Purdue Exponent: City: gay marriage, senate, queer student union, qsu, kirsten gibson

The Indiana Senate approved an amendment Tuesday to ban gay marriages in the Indiana Constitution.
The measure was passed 40-10 with an overwhelming majority. The amendment already has made it through the House, and now must gain approval again by both the House and the Senate. It must then gain a two-thirds majority vote by Indiana citizens.
Head of the Queer Student Union Nicholas Goldsmith, a junior in the College of Agriculture, said this measure is insulting to Hoosiers who are LGBT or have friends or family members who are LGBT.
"(The amendment) certainly won't bring jobs to Indiana," Goldsmith said. "It will scare people away."

I'm afraid that I don't quite get the point. As much as people may or may not like it, homosexuals are becoming recognized as valid and even important members of our community. As that process continues, homosexuals will become to be seen as equals. If you will note, this is directly correlated with the increased number of people nationwide who support gay marriage.

Passing this law only to have it overturned in the next ten to twenty years seems to be a bit absurd and a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Ahh, removing the rights of others secures the rights of everyone.

Republicans/conservatives SAY they are all about freedoms... Not quite.

I understand the fear argument. It is an excellent method of pushing a political agenda. However, I do not believe that the argument is based in reality.

You are confused. It is the Liberals who claim to support human rights then back the murder of millions of the helpless unborn every year.

As an old school Conservative I back the laws of nature, God, and the Bible that proclaims Marriage to be between one man and one woman.

I hate no one, but I do hate what some do and say.

Both sides fail at protecting the dignity of the individual, so let's not make this a left vs. right issue. The true issue is passing of laws that will become irrelevant in the next twenty years. Whether you and I like it or not, the direction is moving towards the full acceptance of gays and lesbians as valued members of our society. As valued members, the masses are beginning to move towards equal protection of the laws for gays and lesbians. This trend is not reversing. So, why waste time and money on Constitutional amendments that will be reversed in the next few years? If you are truly against gay marriage, teach those values to your children and they will either accept or reject your teachings.

Until the trend changes, I see no need to waste our time with such mindless legislation when we have more important issues to address.

Your God is not my God, keep your religion to yourself and out of the law.

And of course one parties hypocrisy excuses the others.

Yeah, the tit for tat arguments are both weak and pointless.

So do you equally support the baning of cotton-polyester blend T-shirts (deut. 22:11) as you do gay marriage?

The land of the free, except them faggots!!!!

It's a ****ing shame.

"Proclaims" huh? Where? I have seen nothing in the bible that "proclaims" that marriage is only between a man and a woman. Not that it really matters as the Bible was just written by man. Not God.

Of course not, that's silly.

Now only if people realized that denying LGBT people marriage because of the Bible is also silly.

Leave your religion in the Church people, it's that simple.

You sound bitter this morning.

Considering that prop 8 in Cali is failing in the courts, it seems particularly stupid to be passing a law that does not address the constitutional problems of prop 8. When prop 8 finally finishes it's trip through the court system in the next couple years, this law will go down at the same time. Is the Indiana senate not aware that states cannot make laws that violate the US constitution?

There is a legitimate question on the Constitutionality of the law and both sides have legitimate Constitutional arguments. It will be interesting to see which side is more persuasive.

It's just a political move to make the 47% of this country who still think LGBT people shouldn't be treated equal all riled up. Nothing more.

So basically this Amendment said: "Hey gay people, just in case you ask again, the answer is NO!"

No because Deut. is not part of the law for Christians, period. Do a search for this question as it has been refuted many times. It ranks right up there with the "what would Jesus do?" crap.
