As America has become more secularized, divorce has skyrocketed, unwed motherhood has skyrocketed, addictions of all natures have skyrocketed, personal irresponsibility in general has skyrocketed.
In fact, I believe the shrinking of the middle class in America can be directly attributed to the breakdown of family values.
As America has become more secularized, we have learned that a marriage foolishly entered into need not be a lifelong trap. As we no longer force women to rely on a man for economic stability, they have more choice, and the reasons that we expect for marriage apply less and less. Unwed motherhood has not skyrocketed. Doing it on purpose has increased, but now a woman has that option open to her. Addictions have not increased at all. If anything, we tolerate addiction less. There was an entire war dedicated to keeping China addicted to opium. That would never fly now.
As for personal responsibility... you might be right about that. But it's not because of a lack of morality. It's a lack of the sense that our actions matter. We're becoming obsolete and disposable. The shrinking middle class is because we're getting financially raped by the upper class, and as for family values... I don't even know what that means. We still form families. Families still protect and love each other. Not sure what family values you think are going away.
