I hadn't thought about it before Oscar brought it up, but these pics and vids are about the only way that troops have to prove that kills are legit. If it's left up to the word of the soliders against the word of the media, the soldiers typically lose out.
The article says it's standard in the military to take photos of the death, finger prints, and scan the retina in the case of the boy that was killed and other kills. It's considered evidence, and that was later used in the investigation. The military also cut his clothes off, which was standard, but posing in the photos and using the corpses as props (humiliating them in death) is not standard military protocol and against the rules. I'd assume mutilating bodies is also against the rules since the kill team is charged with that, and with stabbing a Taliban corpse that was found in the desert. There is a difference between standard procedures and trading videos and pictures for entertainment.

I personally don't think it would be good PR if the military let service members make such pics and vids for entertainment purposes, own them, and trade them. There is a whole market out there for that... They could end up selling them to Faces of Death and numerous websites. People on Stormfront would love to see some of these "hajis" getting blown up and shot to death. People are sick, people would actually celebrate our service members killing people and the brutality of war, and it would give the wrong image of the military. Not to mention it would probably attract a lot more people like the Kill Team to possibly join the military, and dishonor the good service members.

Such behaviour and military culture wouldn't reflect well on our service members or on our government whenever it enters a war... and that's why it doesn't make sense that the military would condone this behaviour in the first place, and it appears that it doesn't.

It definitely isn't a great way to represent other service member while in the uniform himself. I am sure that journalist has an even worse view of the military now...
