In my household we tell the girls they are smart, we talk to them about their grades, and we help them study. Education is important... In fact, the majority of college students today are women, not men. An intelligent woman is not a rare species.
Nobody said intelligent women are rare. However, education and learning are not properly emphasized to young children, especially girls.

I was not saying they encourage them to be stupid. I was saying that they are not talked to as equals as to sons.

This is honestly the exact opposite of the environment I was raised in and the schools I went to - education was emphasized for everybody. It depends on who you know and where you are.

Well, yes, and some little girls are taught to play football and fart loudly. I'd say those are the minority, though.

I honestly don't know why some of you guys are saying this... I have never been ignored in a classroom, or discouraged to pursue an education or study a field because of my gender. I have never heard of a woman in this day and age being told, no... you shouldn't get a phd, just get a nursing degree. That's too much work for a woman... I have only heard of that happening in certain settings like religious settings, but that's about it. It's not typical where I am from, and I am from the north...

Other than that, I know some females feel discouraged in math and science... but the same can be said about males in English and literature... We can do better. As a nation, our performance in education isn't very impressive compared to the rest of the world.
