After Libyan woman’s rape claims, methods of Gaddafi government put on display

TRIPOLI, LIBYA — A woman provided journalists with a glimpse into the methods of the Libyan government Saturday when she was dragged from their hotel by security guards and government minders seeking to stop her from telling her story of abuse. “Look what Gaddafi’s militia have done to me,” she said, raising her long black robe to reveal scratch marks and blood on her thigh. There were also bruises and lacerations on her cheeks, and marks on her hands and ankles indicating that she had been tied up.

A small group of reporters gathered around to listen. She gave her name as Iman al-Obaidi and recounted how she had been detained by Gaddafi militiamen at a checkpoint two days earlier and raped by 15 of them. “I was tied up. They defecated on me. They urinated on me. They violated my honor,” she said.

As she spoke, hotel staff members, security guards and government minders closed in on her and began dragging her away. Journalists who tried to protect her were punched, and one, Charles Clover of the Financial Times, was knocked to the ground and kicked. Eventually, the woman — screaming, “They are taking me to jail!” — was hauled outside to an unmarked car, which whisked her away at high speed.

Another poignant example, along with the Egyptian military "virginity tests" of how rape and sexual abuse are used as methods of repression in the Middle East.

So this is an example of peace loving Muslims?

Luckily the Victim wasn't take out and stoned, but it could still happen.

obviously not, their behaviour was clearly disgusting. unless of course you are insinuating that all Muslims are rapists?

no it couldn't. Libya is not one of the Countries that practice stoning.

I never said all Muslims, however the population of Libya mostly Muslim 90% Sunni 10% Shia, and they are taught that stoning is how you handle a woman who is tainted by anything sexual.

Hell in Afghanistan and other Islamic counties they have stoned women and even girls for showing bare flesh other than there eyes.

Islam is a cult in part because the Koran teaching such nonsense and more equally off putting craziness.

stoning is not practiced in Libya. this thread is about Libya is it not?

if you and anyone else actually cares about the fact women are stoned to death then let your voice be heard. if you are serious about it and care more than just throwing the word around on political mesage boards to score extra points then do something about it instead of moaning about it.

write to all these people. become active. post it on your facebook, send it to all your friends, ask them to pass on your disgust at the fact people are stoned to death.

Libya: Women, Girls Locked Up Indefinitely Without Charge

Farida Deif, Middle East and North Africa researcher for the Women’s Rights Division

‘Protective’ Facilities Serve as Places of Arbitrary Punishment
February 26, 2006

The Libyan government is arbitrarily detaining women and girls indefinitely in “social rehabilitation” facilities, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Officially portrayed as protective homes for women and girls “vulnerable to engaging in moral misconduct,” these facilities are de facto prisons.

“Social rehabilitation” facilities have a distinctly prison-like character. The women and girls sleep in locked quarters and are not allowed to leave the gates of the compound. The custodians sometimes subject them to long periods of solitary confinement, occasionally in handcuffs, for trivial reasons like “talking back.” They are tested for communicable diseases without their consent upon entry, and most are forced to endure invasive virginity examinations. Some residents are as young as 16, but authorities provide no education, except weekly religious instruction.

Some are there because they were raped and they no longer bring honor to their families.

and in America, people blame the victim for being raped too... We don't stone them here, but people like Bill O'Reilly and Rush can do it on national TV/radio and make millions of dollars a year. It's sick... I hardly see a difference in attitude towards women whom are raped...

What those men did to her is really sick... I hope she is ok. She spoke out, she is brave... I hope they don't kill her. Hopefully the rebels will reach her, and they will give her justice.

I can't imagine how horrific it would be to be in her situation in that country right now...

BENGHAZI, LIBYA — The mother of a woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel and said that she had been raped by government militiamen hailed her daughter as a hero Sunday and said government officials offered her money and a house to change her story.

Aisha Ahmed, contacted by telephone at her home in Tobruk, in the rebel-held eastern part of the country, said she was proud of the courage displayed by her daughter, Iman al-Obaidi, whose outburst Saturday was broadcast worldwide.

“I am very happy, very proud,” said Ahmed, who described her daughter as a 26-year-old law student in Tripoli.

The report goes on to say the woman has been released. I'm glad she was able to find a voice and save her life. This is a good look at the ugly face of evil.

I am also glad to hear this woman is out of their custody, and she is safe.

So this is an example of peace loving Muslims?

(lord forgive me for the points I am about to recieve.)

You are such an ignorant asshole you know that.

Jesus H. Christ.

"Yeah they raped because they're muslim".

Christians NEVER Rape.

Ever!

Doesn't happen.

The History Place - Genocide in the 20th Century: Bosnia-Herzegovina 1992-95

Bosnian Muslims were hopelessly outgunned. As the Serbs gained ground, they began to systematically roundup local Muslims in scenes eerily similar to those that had occurred under the Nazis during World War II, including mass shootings, forced repopulation of entire towns, and confinement in make-shift concentration camps for men and boys. The Serbs also terrorized Muslim families into fleeing their villages by using rape as a weapon against women and girls.

-snip

At this point, some of the worst genocidal activities of the four-year-old conflict occurred. In Srebrenica, a Safe Haven, U.N. peacekeepers stood by helplessly as the Serbs under the command of General Ratko Mladic systematically selected and then slaughtered nearly 8,000 men and boys between the ages of twelve and sixty - the worst mass murder in Europe since World War II. In addition, the Serbs continued to engage in mass rapes of Muslim females.

You have some really funny ideas about Islam and Muslim and Arabs because you CHOOSE to be ignorant.

can't help you there.

This doesn't make Christians all rapist, genocidal maniacs anymore then this story makes muslims violent, rapist genocidal maniacs.

Perhaps it should be noted that hotel staff immediately acted to suppress the woman. Law enforcement immediately acted to suppress the woman. Gaddafi's men raped and tortured the woman. This was what is called institutionalized brutality.

Jet's examples are not about institutionalized brutality. Is it a Muslim problem? I think it's about half way a Muslim problem. The suppression and mistreatment of women was institutionalized in that religion right from the very start. Gaddafi doesn't need any help from religion to be the monstrous brute he is though.

While this is disgusting, horrible, reprehensible, indignant, and morally repugnant, I find that people will complain about this, yet have no legitimate solutions as to how to change it.

Personally, I would like to see a region-wide feminist movement protest and stand up for women's rights.

Islam is not rooted in sexism. My father is Muslim and he isn't sexist. In fact, he thinks Sharron Angle and Palin's abortion stances are insane and cruel to women. Sexism is institutionalized and religion, all religions, have played a role in the agency... just look at the hate some Christian pro lifers have towards women who die from illegal abortions.

You can't argue that Christianity or any religion promotes women's equality, least not to my knowledge.

So, is this justification to go to war?

Protecting Europe's oil supply was justification enough for President Obama and the rest. Humanitarian? How very cynical of him to say that in the face of all the brutality being waged against many people in many nations. Guess he thought it might play pretty good with the peacemongers in his constituency. Didn't work though. Tried changing the name of war to kinetic miltary activity. That didn't work either. What next?

You know the religion of the individual troops involved?

Do you really need me to pull up entire lists of examples of where Christians have raped, tortured, maimed, and killed others? The point of the post was to illustrate that it was insidiously stupid to argue that everyone who follows under a certain religious dogma is the same as the rapists who fall under that dogma. Of course, I personally think religion in general can be a pretty insidiously stupid thing.

No I need you to show me that these individuals were christian.

Man does not need a god to kill, rape and torture his fellow man.

Since you are insistant, Lynndie England was an Evangelical Christian. That came out during the court proceedings before she was sentenced to 3 years.
