(Reuters) - Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday.

"I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet," Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

Chavez has consistently blamed capitalism for all the problems in the world, but this may be the first time he's blamed it for problems on OTHER worlds.

Waiter, I will have what he is smoking.

can't really blame him, he's just repeating what Sean Penn told him.

I guess you can blame capitalism for the destruction of planet Headbanger too, which is where Chavez actually lives.

Wow, I want to visit this... 'planet headbanger' as you call it. Some sort of rock n roll socialist paradise.

I liked the one where he blamed earthquakes on GW Bush. Chavez is comedy gold.

Beautiful.

Simply beautiful.

Art needs no reason to exist.

Oh come now, everyone knows the Mars suffered effects of over use of fossil fuels, which led to run away Global Warming, so in a way you could blame it capitalism.

But then again it might have been a pandemic, they might have picked up here on visit. Like in the movies, they pickup a common cold and the marstranaouts take it back and they all die.

This all happened a million years ago. The Face on Mars was to tell future visitors that they were once there.

I think he is right.

Life On Mars was a short lived TV show, while interesting, it showed its hand too soon.

Capitalism killed Life On Mars because they couldn't sell any more advertising after nobody wanted to watch it.

:doh Im slapping myself because he was being sarcastic and was a total joke people..... Cmon now...

Does this mean you take Chavez serious and deny that he's a loon?

Do i take him seriously... Uhhhh yesss... Is he a "loon". No, but i dont agree with all the statements he makes..
I take him seriously mainly because he is doing great things for his country and turning his country in the right direction.

So who would you like to see as the future US dictator then?

How is Chavez a dictator again?

Revised the constitution to allow him to implement any measures deemed to be of national interest and criminalize dissent

Eliminated term constitutional limits so that he can be “president” forever and claims he will hold on to power until 2049 when he will turn 95

Expropriates private land, businesses and any assets he wants, particularly those who have politically opposed/resisted his power grab.

Is quashing dissenting views by nationalizing the media (taking control of it), arresting, murdering and intimidating political opposition

Established the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) (National Electoral Council) and stacked it with 5 out of 6 members who are completely loyal to him and will do his bidding. Venezuelan law requires the CNE to prohit anyone who has been accused or convicted of corruption from running for political office so Chavez just has the CNE accuse any serious potential political opponents of corruption, thereby insuring he can stack the courts and congress with people loyal to him and insuring he will never face a viable opposition candidate for president.

He controls the police, military and other armed groups and uses them to arrest, murder and intimidate, as well as sieze assets he deems “in the national interest”

Quite possible, but again...not our problem. Venezuelans have to resolve that issue

Like Qaddaffi, he's pissing those OIL revenues away on social programs. Does that make him next on the NATO sh*t list. He must be a loon. The major media tells me so. The major media bought and paid for by Corporate USA. Isn't it amazing how successful the media is in adjusting perception. More sock puppets. Can't think for themselves.

Yeah, because runaway inflation, arbitrary detention of political opponents, denial of ballow access and shutting down media that oppose you are such great things. Nice to see that this is what you support. It tells us not to take anything else you say seriously...

Hmmm! Now that you mention it, some of those things might work in this country. Shut down any "alleged" NEWS media that lies. Lock up some of the more flagrant "NEWS" nutters. The inflation is already here. Does anybody lie about the money and banking crisis? We are taxing the poor and subsidizing the wealthy in this country and that's seems to be OK with you. I don't know what a ballow access is , but I'll probably want one if the Media thinks my perception needs to be adjusted to want one. It appears to me that Chavez thinks "Corporatism" is bad for his country.. I agree and think "Corporatism" is bad for this country. I'm not a blind patriot. I think. The corporate hand is up your legislative sock puppets derrierre.

chavez styled socialism is a disease that should be eradicated/ Populistic whining about corporations tends to be the province of the silly

Woot - ancient Martians were capitalists.

LOL - the Socialists have Carl Marx and the Capitalists have the martians . . . sounds like that's won.

Populistic whining about corporations...how about unbridled cheerleading and arse wipeage of crooked callous greedy corporations :)

I take Chavez serious and deny that he is a loon.. He is in imminent danger of being given the Qaddaffi treatment and it is not just the English teachers who are mad at Qaddaffi for not putting a "u" after the Q. Qaddaffi was doing in Africa what Chavez's support for the "Bolivarian Revolution" is doing in South America. Can you imagine the gall of those South Americans to suddenly be suggesting that those are not our natural resources under their national topography. Curses Red Baron, this could be the wave of thinking detrimental to those Western harvestors of natural resources.. That would be Corporations harvesting OIL for example. Now can you imagine Qaddaffi initiating programs throughout Africa suggesting that the natural resources be used to the advantage of the general populace with free social programs paid for with these resources. This is a trend that must be nipped in the bud. My buddy Smitty told me, for a fact man, it is our OIL under their sacred sand and screw 'em all. Exxon/Mobil and its goombah, JPMorganChase, will be takin' care of de paper trail and de money trail, and de assassination details. My buddy Smitty don't know chit, but he's always absolutely certain of it. Probably a Republican. Good man with a gun. Don't give him no pencils.

You do realize that the change in the constitution was voted upon by the people. 92% of those voting voted “yes” in response to the question about convoking a constitutional assembly and 86% approved of the procedures set forth by the president to change the constitution. If your talking about how he has rule decree while yes the Venezuelan National Assembly (their congress) voted to give him decree rule in several areas such as housing, public works, and finances, they announced to give him this power back in December because of the damaging floods that destroyed much of Venezuela farming community.

Yea yea yea dictator because "there are no term limits". Many democratic countries do not have term limits, but we dont call them a dictatorship. He has been re-elected over and over again. The EU released a report stating that elections in Venezuela are fair and free. "Elections were held in respect of national laws and international standards concerning electoral administration and the electronic voting system. The electronic voting system established in Venezuela is efficient, secure and auditable, and the competence of the technical experts is in line with its advanced technological level.]"
It seems that our media and only our country is the only people throwing around these terms. Remember when we did not have term limits?

So that makes you a dictator if you nationalize and use socialism as an economic policy? It makes you a dictator using agrarian reform? Publicly owned land has already been given to hundreds and thousands of farmers. Based on a 2001 land law that allows the government to expropriate land if judged either idle or unproductive.

On the media... According to Eva Golinger (winner of international award for journalism) "Documents reveal multimillion-dollar funding to journalists and media in Venezuela. State Department documents declassified under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) evidence more than $4 million USD in funding to journalists and private media in Venezuela during the last three years. This funding is part of the more than $40 million USD international agencies are investing annually in anti-Chavez groups in Venezuela in an attempt to provoke regime change." You do realize that there are currently between 90 and 100 newspapers and of which at least 80% side with the political opposition, and on radio there are at least 400 that broadcast the oppositions side? In a recent study "Venezuelan state TV channels had just a 5.4 percent audience share. Of the other 94.6 percent of the audience, 61.4 percent were watching privately owned television channels, and 33.1 percent were watching paid TV." (If you would like to take a look at the study and the data here is a quick link http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/2010/images/wr_t_1.jpg ). Right... "murdering"... Right..

I would really like to see a source on the CNE please...
