The idea of firing into a crowd as soon as you're in visual range, but not close enough to identify the target, is a bit alien to me.

If you choose wrong, your dead. And yes, I can say I have some insight into this sort of thing.

Hey, obviously you have more experience in this sort of thing and I respect that. It's just my personal opinion, is all.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

And your opinion is not without merit, I can't describe the ocean if you haven't seen it, and your hesitation, is probably healthy for society.

Well hopefully I never have to face such a situation, but if it happens i'm going to rely on my training and my gut and just hope things turn out okay.

I think if I was a soldier and had a fully automatic weapon with enough practice reloading I wouldnt be scared of 20 unarmed people trying to surrounding me. Once they got within 8 feet I would suddenly point my gun at them at tell them to get the **** back though unless I was fully convinced they where friendly. (but alas I've never been in a situation like this. I have been surrounded by a-holes that hated me because I was white though, And escaped from those 6-8 people when I was a kid. :p I ran and flew atop this giant electric thingy with metal covering. Once they surrounded me I kicked them all in the face.) Firing on an unarmed person outside of 4-5xmelee range would cowardly if they had angry faces and where trying to surround you and blitz you.

lol I had to laugh at that a bit. On a side note, air crews are generally issued sidearms for just such a situation if they are downed, are they not?
