Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's approval rating deflates | Detroit Free Press | freep.com

Farther than Walker.
Faster than Walker.

The guy he beat by almost 20 points just five months ago would beat him today.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has quickly fallen out of favor with the citizens who elected him, reaching levels of unpopularity lower than first term Republican governors in neighboring states and almost as low as the end-of-term numbers reached by his Democratic predecessor, according to a new poll. The poll by Public Policy Polling found 50% of Michiganders disapprove of Snyder’s job performance, compared to 33% who approve, and would prefer to have elected Snyder’s opponent last fall, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, by a 47%-45% margin.

The poll of 502 voters was conducted March 18-20, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4%. Although he won in 2010 by a much larger margin, Snyder’s poll numbers have fallen farther, faster than fellow freshman Govs. Scott Walker in Wisconsin and John Kasich in Ohio, according to PPP. Both have been engaged in high-profile disputes with organized labor in their states.

And all because he is picking on union rights in Michigan and attemptingto shift $1.7 billion in taxes from his pals in the corporate business world to seniors and lower wage workers. Right now, there are over 35 different bills before the Legislature which traget various union rights in addition to taxing seniors and cutting the earned income tax credit program. A sleeping giant has awakened. Recalls are next.

Perhaps.

I will never again pay any attention at all to an announced poll when I don't know exactly how the poll's questions were worded. Neither should anyone else.

but Maggie .... you just did.

(I'm likin' you a lot today.) Thank you for posting the link.

Okay, here's what I think.

Since only 11.5 % of people in the United States belong to unions (public/private both), the poll is skewed. 36% of those polled belonged to unions. Next, when asked who they'd vote for today, there's only a difference of 2%. In other words, 47% would vote for the opponent; 45% would vote for the sitting governor. (8% not sure) This is hardly political dynamite.

Edit re Post #4: Brat! ;)

Go back and reread it Maggie. First of all, Michigan has a higher percentage of union members than the USA does so you cannot use that 12% number. Actually here its over 18% of workers which is a full 50% higher than it is for the nation. That is significant.

Second, they did not ask if the respondent was a union member but if there was a family member who was. The result was 36% yes and 64% no.

Excellent point. It's actually 16.5% from your link (18% was 2009). I'm such a purist. ;) You've shown me that there's more to the story that first meets the eye. I like that. I really don't know how one would take a perfect poll. Probably not possible.

This same group did a presidential poll of Charlie Sheen vs. Sarah Palin.

Sheen won.

And before anyone goes RARR LIBRULS HATE PALIN, I'll point out that Obama lost to Sheen as well. When you put a ridiculous option on a poll, people are going to pick it. Donald Duck would beat Palin and Obama in a poll because when you add a stupid option to polls you end up with a stupid poll.

So yeah. PPP is not what I'd consider a fantastic polling outfit.

I could get a poll to tell you that water is actually dry.

Pay no attention. These are skewed all the time to provide the hypothesis the writer is seeking. Real jounalism is long gone.

Say what you will but this is getting TONS of attention here in Michigan. And it swept through the Capitol Building like a tornado this afternoon.
