A US warplane has crash-landed in Libya, a US military spokesman says.

The spokesman, Kenneth Fiddler, told the BBC there was no indication the F-15E Eagle had been brought down by hostile fire.

Both crew members ejected safely after what was believed to be a mechanical failure, US officials say.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper says the plane went down near the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. It follows a third night of allied air strikes.

A US-led coalition has been in action over Libya since Saturday, enforcing a UN resolution to protect civilians from Col Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

This is very worrying, I hope the two men get to safety or the rebel lines rather than fall into Gaddafi's hands.

If they are captured, I hope any rescue gets them out early.

Building on what U.S. officials called a successful first stage of international military action in Libya, the focus is shifting to widening a no-fly zone across the North African country while continuing smaller-scale attacks on Libyan air defenses and setting the stage for a humanitarian relief mission.Changes are happening fast people have already looked on "you know who"(definitely not OBAMA) to blame.

The two crew members on the F-15E fighter jet both ejected, suffering minor injuries.

One was quickly picked up by a US military helicopter. The other is said to be "safe" after being rescused by Libyan rebels.

The US miltary said their forces were in the process of having him recovered.

The crashed plane was discovered by a Telegraph journalist reporting in and around Benghazi, the rebel-held city.

Seems as hoped - the first was rescued by a US helicopter and the other was with rebel forces who've handed him back to the US.

That is definitely a good outcome in this. But rebel forces?

Man, F-15's don't go down very often. I wonder what happened. Good to see the crew made it back.

For sure but im looking for more backround on the event

They think it was some system failure, but it'll be a while before that is confirmed in detail. They'll probably try to recover any flight recorders or maintenance monitoring boxes that may have survived. It's looked pretty burned up.

Just a small tidbit....

The US is getting closer and closer to a full-scale war break out.

This story got it wrong. The plane didn't crash land it crashed because if it had a problem unrelated to enemy fire.

Th crew is safely back in American hands.

FYI, the F-15 has id the most successful fighter plane in history and has never been shot down in air to air combat and has over 200 victories.

Killing onesies and twosies with million dollar machines will not make any difference. All the more reason. Every accident, every bomb...

We are doing, the Arabs the favor of fighting the only way they can win.

At the end... nothing is going to be settled and people are dying.
