Anti-war protesters arrested near White House

WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 100 anti-war protesters, including the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers, were arrested outside the White House in demonstrations marking the eighth anniversary of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

The protesters, some shouting anti-war slogans and singing "We Shall Not Be Moved," were arrested Saturday after ignoring orders to move away from the gates of the White House. The demonstrators cheered loudly as Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who in 1971 leaked the Pentagon's secret history of the Vietnam War that was later published in major newspapers, was arrested and led away by police.

In New York City, about 80 protesters gathered near the U.S. military recruiting center in Times Square, chanting "No to war" and carrying banners that read, "I am not paying for war" and "Butter not guns."

Similar protests marking the start of the Iraq war also were organized Saturday in San Francisco, Chicago and other cities.

In California, hundreds of people marched in downtown San Francisco. Hundreds more, including students from more than 40 high schools and community colleges, marched in Los Angeles in protest of the U.S. presence in Iraq, organizers and police said.

Some used the rallies to draw attention to the new military action in Libya.

.....and to think it was only a couple of years ago......they were carrying Obama signs.

And now they protest at The Kenyan Tyrant's doorstep.......

Don't be fooled by anyone these people were not arrested for protesting.

As is made clear in the story they were arrested Saturday after ignoring orders to move away from the gates of the White House.

If you are going to protest you still have yo listen to authorities.

I find it funny they are protesting attempts to save the lives of Rebels fighting for freedom from control of a tyrant.

Typical wackos.

All 100 of them? Really? Golly! that is news!

Or is it that you are inferring the passions 100 people apply to anyone and everyone who ever carried an Obama sign?

Personally, in this day and age of the party loyalist... it's refreshing to see a party criticized by it's own members... much more honest than the idiot my party right or wrong, and even when wrong, we're always right lack of mentality...

It's funny how the world works. Take, for instance, those idiot conservatives who so vehemently supported the Iraqi war and praised Bush for such a manuever, and who now bastardize our Commander in Chief for doing something that they could actually get behind. Throw in a dash of birther nonsense, a hatred of all things liberal, and KABLAM! An anti-Obama Libyan war thread appears!

A kenyan tyrant! The worst! /s

You know it. British Tyrants are bad.......but Kenyan Tyrants can defy the will of the people like no other.

Just curious. To which idiot conservatives are you referring. I have watched several newcasts throughout the day and all the conservatives I've seen interviewed approve of this action. Some have expressed that it would have been better if done earlier but I have not heard any say the USA should not have joined the fight.

Would it be that it is you that is the partisian hack? ;)

After almost a decade of criticizing Bush and the Iraq War......the removal of Sadam Hussein--Murderer of over 1,000,000 Iraqis.......

.......are Democrats going to get behind Barack Petroleum's War for Lybian Oil?

You've got to admit it's a little ironic these protesters being arrested by this administration. So now will the left admit that sometimes a president has to do unpopular things for the sake of national security?

Not that Libya has anything to do with our national security considering Gaddafi has been working just fine with the west.

I was reading the Wikipedia article on human rights in Libya. It's bad. The population is under surveilance and dissent is not encouraged. The law is arbitrary and justice non-existent. Gaddafi has tried to justify his actions against the rebels to Obama by saying the rebels are al Quaida. I wonder how he justifies his gulag style governance? How do any of the thugs? Are the citizens so dangerous?

Gaddafi's compound was just hit. U.S. says it wasn't ours. Last time his compound was hit he came to heel.

One has to look no further than this very thread to see a perfect illustration. Of course, one could always adopt your belief on the subject. And you were talking about partisan hackery? ;)

What exactly is my belief on the subject?

Agreed! Ill go a step further and say that Ill take Obama over Bush any day. I rather have a "kenyan tyrant" than a Palin or a Bush in the White House. I LOVE it when the radical looney Righties try to make the President look bad.... when in fact it makes THEM look like fools and makes ME like the President even MORE!

The only difference I can see is the Palin effigy will be hung on private property. The Obama effigy will be hung on public property

How the **** do you call yourself a Libertarian with that statement?!?

It is news. There was a time, not long ago, when the streets would have been filled with tens of thousands of protesters.

Just imagine if McCain had been elected and had exactly the same policy in Iraq and Afghanistan as 0bama has today.

There wouldn't be 100 in DC and 80 in NYC. There would be tens of thousands. But since 0bama is their guy.......

You know, your thread would be much more credible if you left out the birther stuff.

I am not so sure that all Liberals are supporting Obama. One of the biggest Bush bashers anywhere, Cindy Sheehan, is using irony to blast the crap out of Obama. And guess what, her column actually makes sense, even if I don't agree with all the reasons she gives.

Read Sheehan's column before continuing.

Here's the thing about war - Protesters aren't necessarily Liberals, and Liberals don't always side with the president, regardless of political party. The same can be said about Conservatives. Remember the web site antiwar.com? It is a site that was started by Conservatives and Libertarians, who were really pissed at Bill Clinton getting involved in the Balkans. And what about the web site Americans Against World Empire? How about the web site Conservatives for Peace? A member from that organization wrote this article, which was published on World Net Daily. All Conservatives. So the left doesn't hold a monopoly on being against war.

The point I am making is that there are hypocrites on both the right and the left, who do give a damn about which party is in power before making a decision to bash the president over war policy. And there are those, on both the right and the left, who are honest, either in support of wars or against them. Just lumping everybody into categories, such as Liberal and Conservative, and using those labels to categorize all into just those 2 categories, actually misrepresents political leans. There is no "one size fits all" for either Liberals or Conservatives, unless one just hates either Liberals or Conservatives for the sake of hating Liberals or Conservatives. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who hate first and ask questions later. Such is what American politics has descended into.

Some Liberals, such as Cindy Sheehan, I actually have respect for, because their views don't change when a Democrat becomes president, and there are plenty of Liberals, like Sheehan, who are bashing Obama as hard as they bashed Bush. Of course there are also Liberals who only bash the other party, while giving their own politicians a free pass on the same things. Those are the Liberals I have no respect for.

And the same applies to Conservatives. There are some who are on Obama's side, as they were on Bush's side for doing the same. Although I strongly disagree with them, I do respect them because they are consistent, and not party hacks. To those conservatives who are bashing Obama over Libya, who also bashed Bush over Iraq, they not only have my respect, but also my support, as I believe like they do. The US has no business in Libya, and I can say it with a straight face. I didn't support Bush's war in Iraq (although I did support Afghanistan), and I'll be damned if I support Obama's war in Libya either.

To all those Liberals and Conservatives, who believe that war only matters if the other party is in power, and you guys all know who you are, I have a very short message for you.....

Take a hike.

Because I see how Obama takes care of matters. Especially forign matters. With responsibility. Unlike Iraq. And Palin? Dude I rather have Michael Palin as President than Sarah. And Im not kidding. Ive never seen such irresponsible **** than Bush was in office. And I just not voted for him twice... I campaigned hard for him. And looking back, although I personally like the man.... he was a titanic ****-up in office. Either way I want Ron Paul in office much more than Bush or Obama.
