BBC News - Libya: UN backs action against Colonel Gaddafi

It could be just a matter of hours before British and French aircraft, along with an undefined Arab ally, could be attacking Gaddafi's air defences and ground forces. Does anyone think this is a bad idea?

Earlier reports suggested that if the resolution were passed, air attacks on Col Gaddafi's forces by the British and French air forces could begin within hours.

It is not thought that the US would be involved in the first strikes, but the British and French are likely to get logistical backup from Arab allies.

Too little, too late.

About bloody time! I think this is a good idea, if the rebels win, then they'll be somewhat pro-western, and if Gaddafi wins, he'll be weakened from this anyway.

Russia and China - which often oppose the use of force against a sovereign country as they believe it sets a dangerous precedent - abstained rather than using their power of veto as permanent members.

good for them. although, it's a little like voting 'present'.

Too little, too late.

I fear you are right but with our help it could have a much better chance of making a huge difference in the final outcome.

I would target Gaddafi in the first wave of cruise missiles.

No, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. Western nations are banding together, and that's what I had hoped would happen. I just fear it's much too little, much too late.

Too little, too late.

Way too late. Many believed that action in Iraq would slowly lead to transformation in many ME nations - too bad we couldn't take advantage of it in this situation.

Anyone wanna get in on a pool on how long it takes the Brits and the Frogs to **** this up?

At least they're doing something. :ssst:

Ohhhhh, now we know! :lamo

Bas America for doing something. Now, bash America for not doing enough? Bigotted much?

Bill Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Code Pink and other pinkos were involved in the Gaza Flotilla. I can't help but think they are involved in all of these "spontaneous" uprisings too. I hope our pilots don't have to fly over Libya. Let France do it, it's their business not ours. They use the light oil from Libya, we don't. Gad, sickening world.

Qua-Daffy sucks and needed to be dead 30 years ago. Go ahead, give him the business.

Hopefully it's not too late for some "change".

Eventually, Gadaffi and his troops will have to be taken out, and it remains to be seen if the rebels will be able to do it. The UN Resolution does allow for international assistance (arms), but no foreign country can occupy Libya, so as of right now the rebels will have to do the ground fighting. IMO, that's they way it should stay.

This is exactly why I oppose this. "At least they're doing something" is NOT a valid reason to launch a war of choice. The risks are substantial, and "at least they're doing something" just fills an emotional need to assuage our own guilt and act like we're helping, when the conflict is not about us and never has been.

Maybe air strikes will be able to sweep away Gaddafi's regime easily in a matter of days. Equally likely though is that we'll get bogged down in yet another quagmire. And frankly the potential downside is a lot greater than the potential upside.

Now that there is international consensus, I suspect we'll do something as well. We've already placed some naval vessels in the area, including (IIRC) an aircraft carrier.

We don't need to be involved in this, they can handle it.

Strong forward thinking American Leadership..

Oh wait, tha'ts right, we did nothing and said little waiting for others to tell us what to do.

Do something.... even if it's wrong? Sounds like the UN we all know and love.

What happened to those in the good ole USA that have been saying the USA should keep its nose the hell out of others peoples business.

Also, why is everyone so eager to help the people that cheered so loudly when Abdelbeset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi was returned to Libya?
