Apparently Obama wants to use the Arizona tragedy to **** on the 2nd amendment. Of course I am sure all the anti-2nbd amendment loons will try to argue that this is not true. They will also try to say that the 2nd amendment proponents are being paranoid.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama says it's time for US lawmakers to tackle the divisive issue of gun control in hopes of preventing tragedies like the Tucson shooting spree that killed six people.

In an opinion column published Sunday in the Arizona Daily Star, the main Tucson newspaper, Obama argued that improving the system of background checks on gun purchasers should be the first "common sense" step that neither side of the gun debate should oppose.

"I know that every time we try to talk about guns, it can reinforce stark divides," Obama wrote in a rare public commentary on the gun control issue.

"However, I believe that if common sense prevails, we can get beyond wedge issues and stale political debates to find a sensible, intelligent way" to make the nation "a safer, stronger place."

Tucson was the location of a January 8 shooting spree that killed six people, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl.

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was among the wounded, shot in the head while holding an open-air political event when alleged gunman Jared Loughner opened fire.

Following the attack, Americans largely "refrained from finger-pointing, assigning blame or playing politics with other people's pain," Obama wrote.

from the president's pusillanimous op ed, his recommendations:

• First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is the filter that's supposed to stop the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun. Bipartisan legislation four years ago was supposed to strengthen this system, but it hasn't been properly implemented. It relies on data supplied by states - but that data is often incomplete and inadequate. We must do better.

• Second, we should in fact reward the states that provide the best data - and therefore do the most to protect our citizens.

• Third, we should make the system faster and nimbler. We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing, and make sure that criminals can't escape it.

President Obama: We must seek agreement on gun reforms

ie, SQUAT

what a coward

embarrassed yet?

The problem is that this issue is so ridiculously divided. Obama is barking up the wrong tree if he thinks he's going to find common ground between either side. He can call it "common sense" all he wants to, but pro-gun people will just see it as the government stomping on their 2nd amendment rights and anti-gun people will think he's not going far enough. Sadly, there are people in the middle, but they get drowned out in the noise created by both sides of the issue.

At least this is more timely than the ridiculous radio address this week about equal pay, as the goddamn world is exploding naturally, politically, and economically.

And I always love to see the chimp in chief take a losing stance. Gotta wonder if he conjures up his ideas while cruising 18 holes.

"I don't have a clue what he means by that but I'm going to oppose it anyway!"

Dood is such a pathetic bitch. He refuses to act on the illegal immigration problem, refuses to enforce border security, refuses to take a stand on foreign policy issues, but by damn he will make impotent declarations on gun control and have the TSA step up their pat downs and feel ups of old people and children.

You know...I dont know who the republicans will put up against him...probably another clown just as bad as the last one. But how people can be proud of their choice of this guy...its beyond me.

Who's "common sense" are we using? And see, guns make the nation safer from the government... so does he mean safer and stronger for the people or safer and stronger for the government to do whatever if feels like it wants to?

Now if he means by common sense... that those individuals who are mentally deficient are at least sent to a facility where they are evaluated (against their will if necessary) and then released but their records show that they are mentally deficient and therefore cannot legally purchase firearms... I'm all for it. Somehow I don't think it means that though.

It will take a great effort to loose the next election, but I have every confidence that the Republicans will find a way.

Enforcing laws that are already on the books! OMG, what a Marxist idea that is!

• Second, we should in fact reward the states that provide the best data - and therefore do the most to protect our citizens.

Reward states for actual data! Oh, no, we can't do that. That would be relying on facts instead of emotional rants. That sounds subversive to me.

• Third, we should make the system faster and nimbler. We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing, and make sure that criminals can't escape it.

Yep. He's going to send out the goon squads to close down the gun shops, count on it.

Excuse me now, I have to purchase more stocks in Smith and Wesson.

"I don't have a clue what he means by that but I'm going to oppose it anyway!"

Allow me to explain the stupidity of Obama's ideas.

The first comment is stupid, because the laws are already being enforced. Go into any gun dealer in the country and you'll sit there, while they take your driver's license and do a background check over the phone.

• Second, we should in fact reward the states that provide the best data - and therefore do the most to protect our citizens.

This one's stupid, because the information comes from the FBI.

• Third, we should make the system faster and nimbler. We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing, and make sure that criminals can't escape it.

And this is stupid, because it only takes about 5 minutes to do the background check.

He's just trying to re-invent the wheel.

Between Obama and the 2nd Amendment, only the amendment has any common sense.

This story by it's title alone would fit nicely in Media Bias.

When Are the Conservatives going ro just state the facts when wackos like Obama attack the Constitution and the 2nd Amendment.

More guns means safer for and it's overlooked and lied about every time this comes up.

Here is a prime example: Crime up Down Under

Crime up Down Under

Since Australia banned private ownership of most guns in 1996, crime has risen dramatically on that continent, prompting critics of U.S. gun control efforts to issue new warnings of what life in America could be like if Congress ever bans firearms

The phrase "common sense gun control" is an oxymoron all to itself.

Why? On what do you base this opinion of yours?

In the Arizona shooting, information was out there that would have flagged this guy as obviously not mentally stable enough to own a gun.

That information was not in the database used to check this guy out, obviously.

Clearly, this information could use some improvement as far as centralization and access is concerned.

Centralization? Hmmm, sounds collectivists to me.

Hearsay is not evidence that a person is mentally unstable nor is "unfit for service" mean that someone is mentally unstable. Plus he couldn't have been that unstable if he researched and planed.

Do you know what a mentally unstable person is? It doesn't mean you can't plan or research. Many serial killers are mentally unstable and yet, they plan and research their actions. They're not mentally retarded.

I'll bet you'd love to have a tricky subjective measure like that in place to help keep people from getting guns, wouldn't you?

You come off like a knee-jerk liberal. Way to overreact to some common sense suggestions.:roll:

If Sarah Palin had wrote it, you'd be holding it up, applauding her courage.
