Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspires

Re: Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspire

Why on Earth would any one want to have an affiliation with any religous group? Unless it would lead to advancement in society. These "wannabes" are secretly hoping that eventually they will get to produce a movie.

You serious?

Re: Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspire

Not believing in God is just as much a choice as believing in Him, and it's done on some element of faith because there's no way you can know for sure He doesn't. Obviously, atheism is not a God centered religion, but it is a religion nonetheless. Why is that a troubling proposition?

It's not a religion but I do agree with you that atheism does involve a form of faith, because there is no way to know that God doesn't exist. Religious people, and atheist have the same type of mindset IMO, they just believe different things. Agnostics are the ones to claim that we don't know.

Atheism is a religion in the same way that not collecting stamps is a hobby.

I haven't seen it but I don't entirely agree with Maher's uber-atheist stance so I doubt I'd like it.

Awful movie. Very Michael Moore-ish.

Re: Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspire

You are wrong, actually its the other way around, the Koran is full of stuff that puts women down as second class humans. Culturally it isnt always practiced that way. Unfortunatly its more than you'd think.

Is this all you can come up with, so when was the last time this was commonly practiced?
In every Evangelical church I've ever come across. In the Catholic church. In Orthodox Jewish circles. The position of women in Judaeo-Christian religious domains has always been subordinate to that of men.

Islamic extremists are taking the Koran quite literally, its the more moderate muslims that dont follow everything it says.
Which is most sane people's contention. It's only the extremists that interpret the Qur'an (or the Bible's) call to violence and subjugation.

I would of thought that you would of known this?
I would have thought you would have known how to write English.

I always felt agnostics were kinda the real cowards. The religious folks embrace it, the atheist embrace it and the agnostics can't make a decision!

How are they cowards? It's not that you have to be either religious, or an atheist, it isn't someone who can't decide between having fish or chicken, it's a whole other choice entirely, one saying that you don't know what is out there. If you think about it, it's kind of humbling.

Now hun, I was a bit tongue in cheek there, sorry if that didn't quite come across that way.

The same reason you give when we ask why we should care about your favorite TV personality, but no we shouldnt care

Re: Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspire

It's made by a liberal.

If by that you mean, it takes half truths and presents them as fact, you are correct. If by that you mean, it takes the most insipid people that can be found to speak for a religion, and presents them as typical, you are correct. Do all liberals make movies this way?

Re: Bill Maher tells Rep. Ellison the Quran is a ‘hate-filled holy book’ that inspire

I'm going to demand they prove God doesn't exist, just as I've been challenged to prove He does.

Starting the debate by openly engaging in the fallacy of demanding negative proof is not a very good idea. Just sayin'.

It's actually a sign of humility to admit you know nothing about something which you truly know nothing about. Nobody KNOWS FOR A FACT if a God, or gods, exist, and nobody KNOWS for a fact that He, or they, don't. I'm not an agnostic, but agnosticism is simply the admission that you truly know nothing about something that which is impossible to truly know.

And to top that off, he is Jewish. So he would never hurt his own religion. Even though he claims he does not follow his religion. His religion got him to where he is today.
His mother was/is(?) Jewish but it was never his religion. He was raised Catholic.

Depends.

Everyone is agnostic to a degree, I would agree with that.

But people use it as a fence-sitting position more than anything, so as not to offend. There is something to say for that, I suppose.

My experience with most atheists is that they almost believe that they themselves are God-like. There's a condescension about them toward everyone, as if they operate on a higher plane then the rest of us. And the thought of a being above them is almost insulting to them.

Bill Maher is a prime example. He talks down to everyone. He sees himself as superior to the rest of us.

For most agnostics, I don't think it's a fence-sitting position for the purpose of not offending. It's simply that they don't possess a strong conviction either way, so they don't really care and are content with being agnostic.

I feel the same way about Maher's uber-atheism. Not all atheists are like him however. I still feel that atheism isn't a religion in the same sense that many world religions are, but I'm at school now so I will elaborate on those thoughts later in another post.
