Williams was fired from NPR and even before that his comment was all over the mainstream media. His story lasted for weeks. Maher on the other hand barely gets mentioned and is totally ignored by the mainstream media. Is it because Williams works for Fox? IS it a double standard. If a conservative who happens to be an athiest said what Maher said would he be treated differently? I say yes. What say you?
It's not a double standard, it's comparing apples and oranges.

I can't defend either of them. If it was up to me I'd fire Bill Maher too, I think he's a prick. But that's what he's hired for, shock value. This is right in line with his schtick, to mock and denegrate all religions. He does it very even handedly. He says noxious things about Islam and Christianity, and any other superstition.

Now, let's contrast that with Juan Williams. He's never said that he's afraid of sitting next to Christians in an airplane, that's for sure. His comment was based on simple xenophobia, not a distaste for religion generally, but a fear of one particular, foreign religion.

I would say it is because HBO knew what it was getting into with Maher after his 9/11 remarks which resulted in his premature death on ABC. HBO likes edginess (liberal, atheistic edginess it likes, to be sure) in a way that ABC could never afford to absorb. Their venues are completely different, which does impact how people perceive such remarks. Maher, I find, is from what we know of the man, a disgusting human being. That being said, I am not surprised that despite this, his remarks will mostly go unnoticed in controversy in comparison with someone in more... prestigious...or more publicly sensitive venues like NPR (whom, I tend to side with conservatives about, by the way), FOX News, CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, and so forth.

Oh and I suppose all those Muslims who say unequivocally that it is an offense to god for women to be seen uncovered, to attend school, or to be accompanied by unrelated men are really just lying? No. When someone tells me why they believe or are doing something then I tend to believe them.

Sure, and I'm sure some Christian throughout the ages believe its acceptable.

. Oh, right... because when people do things you don't agree with in the name of their religion its because they aren't True muslims/christians/jews/buddhists/etc. How convenient and utterly silly.

Its comical how religious moderates can't fathom the idea that some religious people actually do the things they do (good or bad) because of their religious beliefs. Religious moderates for some reason feel compelled to make excuses for them.

Finding causation in religion is wrong. They don't do what they do because they're muslim.
Not all of them. But its ASININE to believe that they don't when THEY UNEQUIVOCALLY TELL YOU THEY DO WHAT THEY DO BECAUSE OF THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS.

For some, sure. But you want to claim this is true across the board or for most. That is the silly part.

Many people do things because they honestly believe what their preferred religion teaches them. That they will get 72 virgins, that they will die a martyr and be assured a spot in heaven, that they are being guided by gods hand/holy-spirit, that it is gods will, etc. Wake up and smell the coffee. Listen to what these people are saying!!!

Questioning or criticizing another's core beliefs is inadvertently perceived as offensive and rude.

He was speaking directly to a Muslim caller.

Ok, and what did the caller say? I'd bet it was more enraged that what Ellison put forth.

I would hope that discerning people would read the full story before they react to it, especially since Maher is a master baiter...

He's constantly trying out new schticks just to gauge audience reaction, so anything he says or does shouldn't be taken seriously. Making it funny is the hardest part.

Juan Williams: "I get a little nervous when I see a Muslim on an airplane."

Bill Maher: "The Koran is a hate-filled holy book."

Yet, the outrage from the media was directed where?

    Isn't the correct answer 'both'?
