Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play slave

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

Looks like you've become my official translater. ;) So only black students can be offended.

What it comes to slavery... I'd say 99.9% yes...

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

that complaining kid actually seems to have benefited from the lesson
he felt demeaned. exploited
he got it

unfortunately, his mom didn't
and it appears many of us did not
aren't we trying to move toward a color blind society where one's color is not determinative
to have selected this kid to be in the half of the class playing the role of slave only because he is african American would have been racially discriminatory
EXCLUDING this kid from being in the half of the class playing the role of slave only because he is african American would have been racially discriminatory

the teacher got it right
the school revealed its willingness to make decisions based on race
as have a great number of our forum members

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

I see nothing wrong with the lesson at all. The school took the politically expedient route and threw the teacher under the bus. Nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. Good lesson.

Edit: Maybe the only "fair" way to teach this lesson was to have everyone in class experience what it was like to be a slave...in other words, first one group are slaves; then that same group becomes masters. After reflection, this is probably the only way to do it...

And, if we have complete success, he'll go through the rest of his life with a chip on his shoulder.

Right off hand, I would say that I am more irritated by the concept that 10 year old children are in school to be experimented upon than anything else. IMO, if schools were to teach critical thinking skills, they wouldn't need to experiment on children.

As a parent of a 10 year old, I would say the group was definitely too young, though.

or if we actually lived up to what we say we stand for - equality for all - he will appreciate that he has - opportunity - which his african American forebears did not

because we have quit making decisions based on the color of one's skin (at least some of us)

Damn right!!! Schools are for teaching kids how to think, not what to think.

how is teaching students about the history of our nation - including the negative aspects - found to be an experiment

That'll never happen, as long as there is a Liberal drawing a breath.

you can certainly TEACH them......but WHY by re-enacting something that makes a student feel humiliated? stupid.

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

1. If done right, this could teach a great deal about slavery. Let's face it, not one of us knows anyone who was ever a slave or ever owned a slave.

2. But 10-year-old is WAY to young to do this right.

If liberals would allow us, we really could move past this. But that's bad for business.

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

Whites owned slaves and Blacks owned slaves. Sometimes I think people are just so damn foolish with this that they loose all common sense. The teacher was teaching. Some don't do that much. And BTW, it isn't the first time her lesson has been tought like this. First: find out how many years has she been in service and how many times this lesson has been used. Then you'll know if this is a knee jerk reaction.

I am not sure whether or not you are being obtuse intentionally here, but it is the manner of the teaching experiment that is in question here and not the fact slavery is being taught. There are appropriate ways to teach 10 year old as well as inappropriate and since 10 year olds are so inquisitive by nature, a more perceptive teacher would not have needed something so heavy handed.

i don't believe it matters how many times she did it, it's still inappropriate, imo. i don't believe she did this with malice, just a wee bit of
stupidity.

i could talk to you about playing a guitar, but that would not be the same as experiencing trying to play one

similarly, i could discuss with you about the aspects of playing the game of baseball. but until you got on the field and actually attempted to execute the activities required of a baseball position you would not really understand what was conveyed verbally

hopefully, you don't receive a drivers license simply by studying the rules of the road, passing the written test of your knowledge of those rules, without also actually driving a vehicle

none of us want to be on an airplane piloted by someone who has been lectured to about piloting requirements but has never actually flown a plane

finally to my point. sometimes, a verbal lecture without actual experience is insufficient for the one listening to actually 'get' it. probably a major reason why we have chemistry and biology labs in school instead of simply chemistry and biology lecture halls

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

Some estimate there are still 27 million slaves in the world today.

Care to guess where the preponderance of the slave trade lies?

then you tell me. who was actually "hurt" by this lesson?

Was there something you did not understand about my comment, oh very new poster?

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

Damn right!!! Schools are for teaching kids how to think, not what to think.

by this post, it appears you have changed your opinion and have decided that allowing the kids to be participative, to first hand experience the actions of a slave owner, or those of a slave, is a good thing. that telling them what they should believe about slavery is inadequate by comparison

the cited story proves this

the black kid fell the humiliation of being subjected to slavery. apparently in a way he did not before. why is that a bad thing?

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

then you tell me. who was actually "hurt" by this lesson?

Only if you tell me why you are creating such silly straw men?

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

Only if you tell me why you are creating such silly straw men?

then being without an ability to identify with any 'hurt' inflicted upon the students, you acknowledge there was not damage inflicted by the teaching of the lesson in this manner

Re: Bad lesson? Ohio elementary school in trouble after black student made to play sl

OK... I have a few questions. When the classroom was divided into "slaves" and "masters" was race taken into consideration? Were there blacks and whites on both sides? If this is the case, though somewhat insensitive, I do NOT see this as a racial issue and I'm not sure what the big deal is. For example, I know a lot of schools, when studying WWII, do "mock" Holocaust lessons, where classrooms are divided into "Nazi's" and "Jews". It gives students a feeling of what it was like and how easily power could corrupt (similar to the Stanford Prison Experiment). Should Jewish students be prevented from playing "Jews"? No, though a bit insensitive, if explained appropriately, I don't see a problem with this.

I agree with this. If the lesson had all the black kids as slaves and all the white kids as masters - yeah, the teacher should be fired. If not, what's the problem?

In high school we did a concentration camp reenactment. Our entire class were Jews and the older kids were the German soldiers. We walked around the school in a line, all the time being screamed at in German. When we got to the "camp", we were divided into groups and some were sent off to "shower", others were made to work and I believe someone was "shot" in the back as he tried to run away. It was pretty emotional. I'll never forget it.
