We can go ahead and complain that it is not fair to have this turn into a controversy, but it did nevertheless. The school had to apologize, the media went on a frenzy, and there was just enough controversy to make this one hell of a lesson in public history. Wait until the students are more skilled and mature, less resolve in parental involvement, and then one can go into darker territory with more gusto (though always keeping in mind that you have to consider some of the same sensitivities).

In a laughing manner, I would only like to say in a joking tone, "welcome to public history."
It strikes me that that is an admission of defeat, to an extent. That you allow the media to decide your teaching methods seems to me to be asking for trouble. The ability for a self-publicist or, worse, a gratuitous litigant to manipulate a sensationalist and cynical media seems to me to be a major threat to the work of many different professions. It can only have a negative impact on the quality of the service such professionals provide to the public.

Well, consider this. We cannot always get what we want. Quality of services is difficult to define, but in the case of history, we have numerous sensitive matters, and it only becomes more intense with teaching someone's children before they have developed their intellect more. Social studies educators who take it upon themselves to do entirely what they feel is best for pedagogy will sooner or later smack into a wall of hurt. They can have their sympathizers, but it does not erase the reality that education is a matter of public discourse. What becomes a "distraction" will come to haunt that teacher no matter what happens. That is the reality of the situation. We give leeway for educators to do what they feel is right, but that does not become extended in familiarly controversial subject matters. This is the nature of democracy and history.

At times, education is done best behind closed doors.

In fact, there was an excellent lecture some years ago that I always used to discuss the relative dangers of researching and publishing history on numbers dealing with controversial and sensitive issues.

Sorry, I'm not following you. What are 'numbers' in this context?

History is a sensitive subject given the right events and it can get quite controversial even when you think these people are just telling you "the historical truth", even for professionals not dealing with angry parents acting irrationally. I think people just look at this and think "well they should stop whining", which could be a desirable outcome, but it would be foolish to knowingly or unknowingly test those waters as a public school teacher, especially with students so young. It just is not worth it, unless one would consider constant complaints and punishments against a teacher as worth it or desirable. It is always best to do the safe thing in these regards. The public's right to accurate knowledge and emotional impact be damned, I say. In an unsafe area, I'll stick to the former than the latter if I can help it. To some extent, let the family deal with such matters on their own, if they go to a display town that reenacts the slave auction, that should be their call. I would not want to be burdened with such things when the public could lash out at me at any moment.

I'm saying that this is not the first time that this lesson has been taught this way, UNLESS, this is a new teacher. The lesson plans are known and reviewed.
