Guess I kinda feel sorry for the teacher through all this. Although I personally think he or she could have worked around the issue by using other teaching tools, I feel bad that she had to go through all this when her honest intent was just to educate her students.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

I think that the kid wants an apology from the teacher may provide further evidence to a few of the claims I read in this thread, that the parent was the one that had an issue with it, not so much the kid.

At 10, I know I wouldn't have said something in class, but that could have just been me. Shrug. My kid's only 4, so what do I know. I'll have a better idea when she turns 10. So, let's revisit this in 6 years.

Yeah, I think this might be the case as well. If there was no intent to harm anyone then I don't think this should be an issue.

could be there weren't black kids in that class before.

If I were the teacher, my feelings right around now would probably be along the lines of "this is some bull****..."

When teaching about how a bill becomes law, liblady knows the teacher beside her does a reenactment with Reps and Dems in Congress creating a bill and eventually getting to the President to sign. Liblady decides to just have the kids sit in their seats and listen to her read out of the social studies book because someone might be embarassed to be labeled "Democrat". And it's just not fair to pick one "President".

During PE, liblady decides to have the entire class run a mile. She knows Susie has a weight problem and really doesn't like to run. She knows Susie gets embarassed when she runs because she's really slow. So liblady tells Susie, "You don't have to run today. Just go sit over there and color."

You cannot shelter kids from humiliation. You'll ruin them. Lib, I have already said that if I knew a student wouldn't understand what was going on, I would choose another student. So, no, I'm not looking for students to humiliate. Good try, though.
your post says more about you than it does about me.

I'm completely with you on this. What a load of PC nonsense. Scratch that, it's not Politically Correct, it's unbelievably incorrect to make a fuss about a history lesson when it's clear from the context that it was conducted properly, sensitively and inventively. The black kid wasn't made a slave because he was black, but by random. To make an issue of his colour would have been to miss the entire point of the lesson, which clearly some people did. That doesn't make it a bad lesson, it just means that some people have twisted the message of anti-racism and become neurotic drama queens.
