Dayton Police Department Ordered to Lower Standards to Hire More Blacks

Purdy much what I just said, because minority kids go to the same schools and are taught by the same teachers that white kids are. Thanks for agreeing with my assessment.

I have seen you make so many glaringly wrong statements in multiple threads, that you must be trolling. This all wrong.

If I were black, which I'm not, but I am a woman, is that I wouldn't want the testing standards lowered for this job or any other, but in particular this one. I'm going to have to make snap decisions. I'm going to have to carry a weapon. The choices I make need to reflect the mind I have the and instincts to act on training. If you don't trust me enough to give me an exam that will show whether or not I have the ability to succeed in the job, then don't hire me and don't make me a reason for your quota.

No, it's not.

Some black kids go to school with white kids.

The majority of the black population go to school in predominantly black neighborhoods that are filled with poverty.

And not a white kid to be seen? Or Hispanic, or Oriental? Yes?

I went to school with a buncha white kids.

I said predominantly black for a reason.

Guess bussing didn't work, did it?

Paterson NJ, a city that is one of the worst and poorest cities in NJ: $14,587 per student

Newark NJ, Needs no introduction: $17,760 per student.

Bernerds TWP, NJ, A very affluent town: $10,841

It is a myth that poor inner city schools are underfunded. In fact they usually get more per student than comparitive towns that are not poor.

Comparative Spending Guide 2008

If spending money on education was the answer, we'd be the smartest country in the world by a country mile.

It's not. It's about parenting and demanding more from students.

And notice, other countries don't have teachers unions like we do either.

Selective as in they don't give an entire picture of the system.

And your link does? I gave you the entire picture in my state. You haven't shown me national statistics, just a random pdf.

How and when did I ever discredit the military? People who have come from poor backgrounds serve in the military. Our military is American and poor people do exist in America and actually, many people use the military's education benefits to pay for education that would be more difficult to afford. Would it make you feel better if I said that the military has people of all backgrounds, rich, poor, black, white, etc. What is your problem?

So then what was the point of bringing it up? I am a little confused, it would be like saying some poor people go to starbucks.... If you had no point, then why say it. I'll tell you why, you were infering that the poor are steered into the military, if you weren't then what was the purpose.

The Good Reverend's problem? Easy, his awesomeness... :pimpdaddy:

I wouldn't say 'steered'. I would say, however, that family friends who have taught in low-income high schools and other friends who have gone to low-income high schools have told me and others that they pushed military very hard as an option for people at their schools. This is a fact given in response to a question about whether the idea of a vocational career was presented to students. I responded by saying that I had only heard that military careers were presented strongly. And it appears that I'm right.

Many of today's recruits are financially strapped, with nearly half coming from lower-middle-class to poor households, according to new Pentagon data based on Zip codes and census estimates of mean household income. Nearly two-thirds of Army recruits in 2004 came from counties in which median household income is below the U.S. median.

All of the Army's top 20 counties for recruiting had lower-than-national median incomes, 12 had higher poverty rates, and 16 were non-metropolitan, according to the National Priorities Project, a nonpartisan research group that analyzed 2004 recruiting data by Zip code.

Talk about "cherry picking" data......

But it is not exactly representative of America. There are proportionately more Blacks and Latinos in the military than in the society as a whole. The wealthy and the very poor are under-represented in the military. And on average, those in the enlisted ranks are better educated than their civilian counterparts and have higher reading scores.

Teachable Moment -

Read, the very poor, the ones we are talking about are under-represented, and those that do serve tend to score higher in reading tests. What does this tell us?

Wait, but there is more:

"Members of the all-volunteer military are significantly more likely to come from high-income neighborhoods than from low-income neighborhoods. Only 11 percent of enlisted recruits in 2007 came from the poorest one-fifth (quintile) of neighborhoods, while 25 percent came from the wealthiest quintile. These trends are even more pronounced in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program, in which 40 percent of enrollees come from the wealthiest neighborhoods-a number that has increased substantially over the past four years."

In effect the middle class produces soldiers are a rate that is equalivalent to ther representation in our population, the poor are under-represented, and the wealthy serve at a rate greater than their representation.

Wait, but there is more:

I never said 'very poor', I said poor/low-income- two different things (you're changing the goalposts...if you're not, please show me where I said 'very poor'). I have only used two terms: poor and low-income. My sources supported my point and yours did nothing to go take away from it.

We are in the throes of an Affirmative Action Revolution. If they can't beat you on MERIT they'll choke you on POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

I came across this image at Hillbuzz this morning. Pretty good.

Semantics? really?

ok, you talk about that low income school. Are they not "very poor"? are you now calling it "middle class"?

My sources showed you that no, the military is not recruiting poor/very poor at a higher rate than anyone else, and going by the numbers it is clear that the middle class and the rich are over represented in the military while the poor/very poor are underrepresented.

The semantics game has failed.

I said poor/low-income. Very poor is not the same as poor just as very rich is not the same as rich. Those phrases are meant to indicate extreme wealth and poverty.

I'll repeat it again:

Your article mentioned nothing about recruitment. In fact, the word 'recruit' is no where in it. I don't even see why this is significant enough for you argue about.

So that school you've mentioned before is not "Very poor"?

your mincing words.

What about the other three branches? cherry picking again?

anyway, are we talking about poor education? Most rural schools are actually pretty good, so your point is inconsistant.

You keep twisting what I'm saying and making my actual arguments into other one's. You've done this in several threads and to several other posters. I'm done. I've told you what teachers in low-income schools have said, I've shown what nonpartisan studies have said. Both support my argument. There is nothing more to say.

Ok you take your ball and go then.

What the hell, is this BS.

Blacks should be highly offended over this because it's clearly RACIST.

What ever happened to equality? Every time the standards are lowered for any minority it is a slap in the face and for the minority to accept it without a fuss it's an admission of being of a lower caliber than others.

If you are offended by this tough I'm no the one who asked for the lower standards.
